I'm looking for suggestions on puppy food for my 12 week old pup. Our vet recommended Wellness, but it isn't available in our local supermarkets and I hesitate to commit to a food that I can't readily get in an emergency. Any ideas?

Wellness is a great puppy food.
Not to sound snobbish, but supermarket food is usually going to be a step down in quality. You can order Wellness online from Petfooddirect.com
http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/dept ... VXBQPX12U5
and you can always keep extra on hand in the garage in a Rubbermaid tote. It is on sale now and they will send you coupons once you start ordering.
Here are some coupons for the site, but they expire soon. I am sure more will be available soon:

Thanks everyone!

Is Nutro all natural? The vet recommended that....I honestly don't even know what that means.

A friend recommended Science Diet. Is this a good one too?

I'll definitely print out this thread when I go to Petco tomorrow. I just bought my rubbermaid container to fill up, so thanks for that tip, Linda.

Hi there, congratulations on your new puppy. There is a thread on here somewhere, that tells how to grade dog food and there is a list of the best dog foods. I can't find it. I tried to do a search, but, I must me doing something wrong. Science Diet used to be good but it's not anymore.

Can anyone find that thread? And, I was wondering if we could make it a permanent thread at the beginning of the forum, do you know what I mean?

Nancy for some reason Petco and Petsmart don't participate in the Buy 10 get One free. The feed stores and such do, but it ends up being about the same at least around here because the feed stores tend to be a few bucks more per bag.

I will tell you though a Petco or Petsmart sale price is GOOD!!
Last time I bought 12 bags!!!

well it says natural, but then again I buy stuff in the grocery store that claims its natural but then a close look at the ingredients would say maybe not. Anyway there are a million kinds of science diet so I am not sure, you could go to their website and look at ingredients.

Here are the ones for the Natural Choice Nutro we all like.

The Petco around here gives a free bag after the purchase of 10. I wonder if it is different depending on what area you live in? :?

Science Diet NO

maybe the worse food on the market

here is a grading chart

How to grade your dog's food:
Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewers rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count
"chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point
94-100+ = A
86-93 = B
78-85 = C
70-77 = D
<70 = F

Thanks for posting that chart Doodlesville. That's what I was talking about. Could one of the administrators make this a permanent post at the beginning of the forum? It would be great to refer to it regularly.

oh the petco program I forgot about that!

I was thinking about the actual Nutro Frequent Buyer program. That one does not work at Petco or Petsmart. Maybe thats why - cause they have their own program!
