we have a few different gates...we bought the cheap ($20) ones you can get at Walmart that fit to a specific size door. We bought a more expensive one that swings open and close for the one entry to the kitchen (so we didn't kill ourself climbing over a tall gate)...we also have xpens that can be used in pieces to block larger doorways. It's all dependent on the layout of your house in my opinion.

P.S. We found plastic xpens cheaper on amazon.com than in any store.

Like Leslie, we bought several different ones. We bought 2 from Dr. Fosters & Smith

These are 3 ft high and work well between rooms and at the top of our basement stairs.

They are also good because they have a cat door in the bottom.

We also have a baby gate which we can move from place to place and a expandable gate that we can swing out of the way.

You might also consider an xpen either opened or connected. We got our from http://www.digitpet.com

Try Target. I originally got my gates to keep my baby out of the kitchen, but it's perfect for keeping the puppy in :) I have a walk-through on one side and a cheaper one that we have to step over on the other door. I have two different pressure mounted gates in the house and they both work great. I do have a tip though...if you go the walk-through route and there is alot of in and out and it's mounted against drywall I'd stablize it with those round closet rod hanger things. I found that the gate slid around a bit with the kids going in and out and this has worked perfectly!

The gate that we have that you can open to go in and out, mounts to the door jam with screws..not shower rod things. Really sturdy. We just have them in areas where we will always keep them up.
