We have a metal crate but Hershey will be out growing it soon.
Is this the preferred style? Has anyone tried the large plastic ones?
I've heard that doodles can go right through the plastic material
with enough time and persistence.

Thanks for the help,
Bryan

I use the extra large hard plastic crates for all 5 of my dogs.

I have never had a problem, its like their own little bedroom.

I don't crate them long hours though, just as needed and of course their crates are always open if they want to go lay down. (Except the little guys who is on top and I lift him in when he wants to eat in peace)

Denver will chew the plastic ones so we use the metal crate.
He is now in the largest size we could get. He is in his crate about 3-4 hours a day. No problems so far. He is 8 months old, been doing it since 8 weeks old.

Sue,

Does your doodle sleep in the crate at night or (like many on this forum)
does Denver share the master bed?

Unfortunately, because we work 8-hours a day Hershey must spend more
than 3-4 hours a day in her crate. I want her to feel safe and secure but
hate to think about that "caged up" animal. Her obedience trainer tells us
to not impose human emotion on our pet, but our guilt drives us to
spend as much time as we can with her when we're home.

Denver sleeps on our bed.
Ahem.....you sleep in Denver's bed like I sleep in Jonah's!

I had to get the heavy duty metal crate for Jonah with the extra strong tray because he shredded the old tray! He's on semi-house freedom because he couldn't handle the "whale" any more.

Max has the large kennel plastic crate. he's in it when i go to work and he hasn't busted it yet. yes max sleeps in our bedroom at night though I recently had him in his crate at night for a week when he sick and had diarrhea.

Peanut is in a plastic crate for bedtime at nights.
They're like a den for them and I don't need to put a blanket over it either.

Tanner slept in a plastic crate for the first three nights but he hated it, drooled and panted.('')

Fourth night he jumped up on the bed and looked us straight in the eyes to say, I'll sleep here if you don't mind. He has been there ever since and sleeps peacefully all night.(':)

During the day I use and X pen 4' square and 4' high in our family room. I put one of the Costco dog throws in it, give him a kong and a couple of toys and he does fine. He is in it for 4 hours in the morning when I go to work. I come home at noon for an hour of walking and play. He then goes back in until my husband comes home at 4:30. He has never soiled his pen but I don't think he could be left any longer as he would get too bored. A bored doodle is not good('')

I leave the radio or TV on as well..he likes the Animal Planet.

Gene,

Thanks for the TCM suggestion...Tanner likes a change...right now he is in his pen listening to a Barry Manilow CD while I clean the house. He likes to go to sleep to "bedtime beats". As soon as I turn it on, he goes to the bottom of the bed and goes to sleep. :)

Lexi has a large plastic crate that is used when I am at work, or if nobody is home. Although she is a mini- those of you who have read some of my other posts know that she is a POWER CHEWER. We have had no trouble with the plastic crate.

I only work part time- so she is crated about 5 hours a day, 3 days a week, and she does sleep in the crate. She goes right in, and obviously views it as her bed. But I must admit-I would love her to join us in bed, but I have my cat Rascal in our room as his "Lexi free haven".

Before Lexi came along in October, Rascal was definately "King of the castle" so with so much attenion given to Lexi on her arrival, and Rascal's life completely turned upside down-I wanted Rascal to have a place where he could have some peace. Maybe someday we will all be together!

Do we have the most spoiled dogs in the world or what.Hahahhahah
Denver does like animal planet, anything rock & roll and he is a dancing
fool. :D
We are all done in by the Doodle Eyes. Denver can melt an iceberg with his eyes. When we are out walking him a lot of people keep there distance, something about a dark coloured dog I guess, but when they get closeup, one look in his eyes and they melt. It is precious.

With nine cats I am sure you can imagine how upside down my household was when we first got Denver. 7 cats sleep in our bedroom, 3 sometimes 4 on our bed along with Denver. The others sleep in their cat trees that are higher up where Denver can not reach them and visa versa. When I say sometimes a fourth cat on the bed it is because she is the alpha female and definately gives Denver a run for his money during the day time, but at night she is more forgiving and will sleep in the bed if Denver is already sleeping. The other cats on the bed are fine although they took about a month before they would sleep on the bed with a DOG. These three cats are Denver friendly during the daytime and the only cats that will kiss him and give him the time of day. They will sleep on the bed with us and Denver and will cuddle close up to his back BUT if Denver tries to get up in the night it is a free for all and they all jump off as they have learned that his giant paws are something to avoid. Fortunately he does not move very often during the night.

My Charlie has learned to keep his distance exactly as long as the cats swiping reach.

I also love the steel crate and Charlie just uses it for naps now but I do have a pop up kennel in my Yukon - oh yes - my father in law was afraid someone would steal him when he was little so I got the kennel and he gos in it when I leave him alone in the car - goes in all by himself I might add - he has blankets and toys so he haS lots of room to move around - spoiled - oh yeah!!!! :D
