Nevermind...I sort of found my own answer. Around a year is okay...or second heat or so. My Sadie is spayed but I know of a byb who is going to use a LD as soon as she turns one and I thought it may be way early, but I guess not.

Julie, it is way too early...a dog has to be mature enough to be a mother. It is more than heat cycles. A year old is much too young...at the very least, a dog should be 18 months...and fully tested.

I'm a recovered byb so I have some sympathy but I do agree that 1yr is too young. In fact my TRUFFLE just turned a year and was having her first heat cycle on her birthday! But my very breeder-friendly vet was happy to hear that no, we aren't breeding her. He didn't give me his opinion until after he asked, but after he got my answer he told me he was glad. I appreciate that kind of respect but agreed 12 mos. old is too young in the larger breeds. I think if it was the 2nd, potentially 3rd cycle for a small breed dog, like at 14mos. old, I could see it but with my conscience even 13-15mos. is too young.

I had a 1yr old dog come to me pregnant (an accidental breeding, not of my choosing) and the poor baby cried with the whelping of her first 2 puppies!
