Update/ In need of reassurance....

Napa and I are in RI, and we've had all of our introductions. Napa's proving to be slightly difficult. He's currently only really listening to me, which isn't that surprising since I'm the only one that's trained him. But I've got some questions about Napa and Striker, and I'm hoping that the multi-dog families can help.

Striker keeps ATTEMPTING to mount Napa. I know this is normal, so I'm not concerned, but Napa keeps putting Striker in his place. But Striker's just not getting it. Napa's reactions are slightly getting more agitated. Is this normal? Striker doesn't know doggie interactions. I don't want Napa and Striker to get in a true fight, so should we start stepping in? It's very obvious that Napa's the more dominant one. Striker refused to drink for him bowl after Napa drank in it. And Napa really won't let Striker dominate him.

Also, they're distant with each other. Is this normal? They haven't really tried to play with each other. We got home about 10, so they've been together for a while. Everyone has great pictures of their doodles together, but Napa and Striker aren't being very friendly....

Is everything going to be ok?

Kirby and Dexter had some somewhat significant issues establishing dominance - we had some not so nice battles for about 2 weeks. Dex then finally submitted and we have had total peace since. I would give them some time.

We let them work it out themselves to a point. They may need to battle to get their issues worked out. We stepped in when the sounds got bad and it sounded like a fight (squealing, etc). Hang in there - once they get settled it should be much better.
Same here. Beau keeps putting Cacao into place. But Cacao kept telling Beau it was her house. But now we are starting to calm down. It just takes some time.

Your not the only one. Beau still mounts Cacao. Not as much as that first. But some days he doesn't at all others he tried two or three times.
Imagine a yorkie dominating a labradoodle :D she went nuts the first few days she was yapping, trying to jump high in the air to bite his face. we finally had to let them get more close to each other. It ended up that she was most likely more scared of his size. She would have lincoln doodle hiding behind our big ficus tree in the back.

Now after all that lincoln gets her back by making her play with him when HE wants

i did tell them both out loud " you to better get along because you are stuck together for a long time"

Samantha,

Beau probably will be dominant, I'd guess....Cacao will be ok with it...even though she was there first!! Mounting is both the dominance issue and Beau's not fixed yet, is he?? I am sure he is raging and doesn't realize his manners are not so good..... I do say something to Abby who mounts and humps 100miles an hour on Coco....sorry, but she does!! I tell her to get off and no.....it may be "natural behavior," but I generally try to stop it. I may be wrong for doing so......don't know.

no Beau isn't fixed yet. But he will be soon. I think Cacao will let him be the head of the house. But I know she won't give up with out a fight. ((LOL)) Only if you could see her try and fight with Beau. She is so small Beau just pushes her over if he doesn't want to play. And the mounting thing will get better, it already has. So I am not worried about it. But it about a week and a half Beau should be getting fixed. Poor guy.
hahahaaa sorry but i do see humor in this

If peanut is getting too much attention according to Mr Max he then tries to hump her, sometimes she lets him knwo it bothers her other times she ignores it.......and sometimes she does it to him.

we say UH UH or knock it off and they do
I'd give it time Kristen - They may never learn to love each other, but they will learn tolerance. I'd allow Napa to put Striker "in his place" as long as nobody really gets hurt - I wouldn't want to be humped like that either   so I'd allow Napa to get his feelings about it out there :) Striker will go too far once or twice and Napa will put an end to it. It will just take some time!

Good luck!
It should be fine, Kristin...they will determine who is the alpha and when they do, it will calm down...but they may try to work it out again. I have found that I have different alphas at different times over different issues. One is alpha in sleeping places another is alpha in eating another is alpha playing ball...it all works out.
As hard as it is sometimes you have to let them sort it out. I do step sometimes when I want them to know that I AM ALPHA! :D
The humping can be annoying, but I have found that the less attention they get, the less they hump...so I just try to distract them with a ball or something. Distractions work wonders and you don't have to worry about being referee.
Doodles are generally good natured dogs, but they are dogs...and they have ways of selecting the pack leader...sometimes it CAN lead to a fight to the death...I don't see that happening with two Doodles, but it is possible...here is an article that explains how humans can remain the alpha in a pack...and how dogs determine who is in charge:

Very good article, Jac!

I bet Beau will be dominant too...Dex fought it for the first 2 weeks and then gave in (I don't think Dex has the ability to be dominant - he's such a baby!).

Kirby still humps Dexter...it mostly happens when 1) they have been apart for awhile or 2) Kirby is really tired. We tell him to cut it out and he does - Dex actually seems to enjoy it
I think Napa's the dominant one. Everyone went to bed, and Napa now just has to give Striker a look and Striker beats it. I almost want Napa to hump Striker and get it over with it. But Striker hasn't even gotten close to mounting Napa. The closest he got was one paw and Napa put him in his place. But, you can tell.... excessive sniffing, lowering of the hind quarters.... So, we'll see. Napa's at the groomers now, so it might be different tonight, and they're separated.

Thanks for all the support!
there s no question that Sabrina is the alpha..Lucky and Toby
give her a wide berth when she s around..

alot of growl s, pushing and nipping determined their position s
in the household..

though annoying and sometime scary..it s their way of
communicating..
Update... I think Striker's beginning to get it. They seem a lot more comfortable with each other today. I'll post some pictures in Napa's grooming topic.... (to be posted shortly).
