Charlie's annual vaccinations are due soon. He was given the lepto vaccine as a puppy because I didn't know better. Since then I've done a bit of reading. According to the internet (which is not necessarily reliable), the vaccine only works against a couple of strains of lepto, lasts only a few months and has the highest rate of adverse reactions.

I really don't know if lepto is a big threat in the midwest or if I should opt out of this one.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Hey Deb I just asked that same question to my favorite vet who practices in Pittsberg Pa. She suggested asking the local Vets how many cases of Lepto they have seen in the past year 5 years etc and then make your decision on whether to vaccinate or not. That goes for all optional vaccines!...best m

Thanks for the reply. Since I originally posted, I started searching again and found that the midwest - particularly Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa - have the most cases so maybe it is called for.

It's just hard to know that the bigger risk is - the disease or the vaccine.
