Hi all, new here. My wife and I are looking at getting a Labradoodle. I have read a lot about their characteristics and they really appeal to us. The dilemma is who to buy from here in Australia. I have looked at a lot of breeders websites and in particular Tasmanian Labradoodles. I don't know how many Aussies are on this forum, but I would really like some comments on this particular breeder, good or bad, before we take the plunge.

Regards, Rob

Hi Rob welcome to the forum. It's funny all you hear about hear in the US is Australian Labradoodles. It would seem that they are everywhere down there! I've got no useful advice so good luck in your search. :)

Hi Moe. Well around my way you just don't see any! I have seen a few down the beach but they are not a common dog here. It is a touchy subject on dog forums in Australia in that crossbreeds are mostly frowned upon, that is the main reason I joined this dedicated forum.

People are nuts. I joined a dog forum and was literally attacked for 1. buying a puppy instead of adopting from a shelter. 2. Contributing to the 'designer dog craze'. People don't seem to realize that all dogs came from deliberate crossing of other dogs. Every breed has to start somewhere. ugh...

When I was looking for dogs I always used to visit this website:
Valley View Dogs - Labradoodle Schnoodle Spoodle and Moodle Breeders

I am not familiar with with Australia so it may be nowhere near you. You might want to call them or another breeder and see if they have partners in your area.

I live in NY and you can't swing a cat without hitting a doodle. On my block there are three. Good luck.

I have no help in Australia - but my dog just had a TASMANIAN DOODLE moment where she was a blur racing through my house like a maniac. I thought this thread was going to be about a crazy doodle running laps around the house LOL!

Good luck, even with the 'zooms' late at night, they are great dogs!

Checking in to see how the search is going. I too was mocked for purchasing a "mutt" instead of rescuing one from a shelter. Hey....my house - my rules - and what currently rules is the puppy!

I hope you're successful in finding the perfect dog; keep us posted how things are going. And if you get more grief for wanting to purchase a mutt? You got tons of friends here in the states!

I have looked at many dog forums and I see posters that talk about mixed breeds are jumped on straight away. I have had Golden Retrievers, Labradors and Cocker Spaniels in the past, all pedigree. They were beautiful dogs. But recently we lost our Cassie who was a Maltese Lhasa Apso cross and she was the most loving, intelligent dog I have ever owned. I am looking forward to getting a Labradoodle, hopefully early in the new year.

Is the biggest issue not that breeders are charging tons of money for these dogs and people are paying it for a mutt? The prices on designer breeds is absolutely ridiculous.

Ours was adopted but if we were to spend money on a new dog it wouldn't be over a thousand for a doodle, we'd just get a well bred Poodle for that money.

I agree, the breeders are charging a premium. But I suppose it stops a lot of owners from dumping them. I don't know what it is like in the US but here in Australia often parents will buy their kids a cute reasonably priced fluffy puppy for Xmas and when it gets older and they decide it is all too hard just take it to an animal shelter. There is a lot of unwanted dogs in animal shelters which often end up euthanised. I can't imagine a $2000+ dog being bought on a whim and maybe sent to an animal shelter later on.
Your comment about a poodle, I can't say I really like the look of poodles, but I do like the look of a Labradoodle. I also keep snakes and some of them are in the $2000+ range here so that sort of price for a dog that I like, to me, is not over the top.

Hi Rob
I live in Tasmania and have a Labradoodle from the breeders down here, I will say, lovely people, BUT.....My dog is sick and has been sick since I got him as a puppy at 9 weeks old and the customer service from the breeders is just not their, I think they are turning a blind eye to me and my dog because I have asked for my money back, my vet bills are mounting up and its becoming unpleasant for me to have this dog, because I am getting no assistance from the breeders as far as basic and simple information I am requesting.
