leo always barks and whines after we've fed him and he scavanges anything he can get. we dont know whether hes still hungry or just greedy. hes 11kg's at nearly 5 months-would he class as a large breed and need large breed puppy food?.

also anyone feeding hills science puppy food-the measuring calculations are confusing. at 10kg a 4-9 month puppy shoud have 255g's but after that it jumps to a 20kg puppy getting 430g........so what do we feed an 11kg dog?

YES, absolutely. labradors and Stabdard poodles are both large breed dogs.

The most popular food among doodle owners on this site is Canidae All Life Stages.

I would agree, I feed my guys Large breed... they are 55lb at 11 months old.

They are both grazers so I get the feeling that it's a puppy/breed thing. And when they are off-leash it takes a lot of patience to get them to REALLY listen 100% of the time... I'm still working on this.

Good luck!

Puppies, like kids, can vary a lot in their need for food. Some can't seem to ever fill up, and some eat so little you wonder what keeps them alive. When they're entering a growth spurt they will usually eat more and when they're done with one their appetite will usually be less again. The guidelines on the package are only averages. If he's still hungry, give him more... weight him weekly and check to be sure you can feel his ribs if you press in a bit, but you never want to be able to count them by simply running your hand across.

Let the pups condition and appetite dictate how much they need to eat. You'll both be happier that way.

im also from england and feeding hills science!!

im in exactly the same situation as you the measuring guides are not great on the hills bag,

molly is 5 months old nearly and we tend to fill her bowl and she eats till she is full pretty much.

we tend to give her 3/4 handfulls of hills every 4/5 hours.

I asked my vet this same question the other day - if my dog isn't going to end up 25kg+ (i.e. over 55 lbs) then should I be feeding her food for large puppies?

The vet's reply was: there's never any harm in feeding a dog food for a large puppy even if it doesn't end up in the 'large' category - it's only a problem if you feed a large puppy food only suitable for small/medium puppies. So, you can't go wrong.

I feed Jofi a mix of Hills science plan for large puppies (25% of her food) and nature diet (natural ready-prepared raw meet/veg). I personally find she has problems with Hills as her main food source - perhaps because it contains wheat - although she's fine with this proportion - doesn't seem to have allergies to it. I also find the feeding directions confusing - and Jofi's a tiny bit bigger than she need be (the feeding instructions from Nature Diet are also rather confusing - for her weight they suggest feeding 3.2 packets of nature diet a day - seems like way too much!).

I have a huge bag of Hills - once I've used it up I'm going to switch to the natural version 'Nature's best' which cuts out the wheat, soya and additives. I can't get Canidae in the Netherlands, otherwise I'd probably consider that.

Hope this helps,
Libby
