Marty, friends of ours plsy ballwith their neufie/lab mix but they make him sit on the driveway when they throw the ball in the opposite direction. This forces him to dig his nails into the cement (so to speak) as he turns to run after the ball. They swear by this. Does Jorja play ball with you? Might be worth a try.

If you're really interested, I dremel my dogs' nails. It grinds the nails down so they are even and short. You can call around to see if any groomers in your area do it (many do) or ask your vet, or you can do it yourself. You need a dremel and sanding bands, NOT a grinding stone. Go slow and make it fun for the dog (lots of treats!) I follow these directions exactly... http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/ ... index.html
She has great pictures and does a wonderful job explaining it. Or you can ask me! I love dremeling and I swear by it.

We've been playing ball on the driveway so that has helped with the toenail situation but it's really hard on my Border Collie's arthritic legs so we tried the dremel and I've got to tell you that that works great! The dogs are much calmer than when we use the toenail clippers. We will continue to use the dremel for now on to tidy up their nails. It's nice now that when they walk on the hard work floors there isn't the usual tap tap of little feet so I know we are getting them short enough. :D

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!

I'm glad it is working well for you! I think dogs tolerate dremeling MUCH better than clipping because it doesn't squeeze the nail. And, you don't end up with rough edges. I can't stand it when the dogs nails click on the floor!
