Charlie likes rawhide but I usually limit him to an average of one small piece per day. He's never had a problem with it but I don't like to think of a big chunk of it sitting in his tummy.

If your doodle tolerates it well, there's no harm. It keeps her out of trouble for awhile, right?

I keep a rawhide, or hoof, or pig ear, or pork flavored twist or something around all the time. If she has tat stuff, she is not chewing the furniture. Samantha has never had a problem. Te one that are easy to chew up I limit to one or so a day and keep the ones that last a long time around all the time. Hoofs, and some of the bigger rawhides dont get chewed up fast, actually really slow.

I agree with the fact it keeps them out of trouble.

I would stay away from rawhides. Before we had Riley, a friend of ours gave their dog a rawhide and it ate it. Well, I guess he didnt swallow it all the way and it hardened in his throat overnight and he choked on it, :( no more doggy... it was very sad.

If you decide to give them to your dog, be very careful and keep a close eye on them.

I agree. It keeps Riley busy for a split second when we give him a bone :p lol. We just keep a close eye on him, and we make sure we dont buy the rawhide with the knots on the end. It worries me, but he loves them :) Maybe our friends dog just didnt chew it enough? I'm not really sure, thats just what we were told :(

I don't remember exactly what it was, but all I remember is that rawhides are BAD. Something about doing somerthing bad to their insides. I have seen CHOPPED, pressed rawhides.....I guess they must separate if moistened? Don't know if they are any better.
I use knuckle bones, they saved my house with Tuesday & now with Marley. I have recommended them for all my puppies. I have also used Bully sticks, but I'm not sure if they are any better than rawhides.
Definitey the knuckle bones though!!!

I don't know what I would have done without raw hides when Cinnamon was a pup. She was a power chewer. They never bothered her. I asked the vet about them and she said they're safe as long as you don't get the ones with the knots on the ends, they can chew them off and swallow them whole - and they will. I had to watch Cinnamon like a hawk when she was given one of those. That's the first thing she would do, chew the end off and I'd take that part away because she'd go for that end.

I'm thinking it's up to the dog as to which one can tolerate it or not.

I was always under the impression that it was the chopped and pressed raw hide that was bad... hmmm.. well, I gave Lucas a rolled raw hide (all natural, no flavor stuff) that is about 1 inch thick and about a foot long, he seems to chew and play, but not really ingest (which is what I like) so... so far so good, since the bully sticks don't agree with him at all... another thing that I do give him is a raw beef rib... he LOVES those... and will work on the bone for a while before I toss it...

I use the bully sticks with Tyke - although all dogs are different, she has had no problems with them. They don't turn into a big, soggy, undigestible mess like some rawhides can, and don't present such a choking hazard. I like the knuckle bones as well. We've never used rawhids because of the danger of choking, and my aunt always called us worrywarts, until the day her shih tzu almost choked to death on one right in front of us (he's ok thank goodness, but had he been alone, he may well have died!). Now she only uses bully sticks with him.

Layla swallows them whole and then throws them up. That's how I found out not to give them to her.
I have also heard of dogs swallowing them whole and having blockage in the intestines. This requires sugery. Apparantly they don't brek down well in the stomach and can get stuck.
Make sure if you decide its ok for her to supervise her so you know if she chews them up or swallows them whole. I have a friend who gives his dog one everyday religiously, but he knows his dog chews them and has never had a problem.
If your dog swallows them whole or ever gags or throws one up, I would stop right away.
Good luck

rather than rawhides, we give kumo cow's ears. he gets one once or twice a week -- we always supervise him while he's chewing on it to make sure he's chewing it up properly rather than swallowing large chunks. he absolutely LOVES them! whenever we get one out, he runs through his full arsenal of tricks trying to get us to give it to him. and the best part is they don't turn into a soggy mess that sticks to his fur like the chopped/pressed rawhides do.
