Wow! I don't even know what else to say. It's good of you to bring this to our attention. How horrible!

Tina, I was going to email that guy but I think the article says he is the only one who voted AGAINST the puppy mill. We need to find the other wackos that voted FOR it! Is it right to assume that the other 4 commissioners listed under that one are the ones that voted to allow this?

Anybody know how I bring this to the attention of 60 minutes? That's what I just told them I was going to do in my hotheaded e-mail. Can I?

This should be illegal...

Doesn't debarking and caging and overbreeding thousands of dogs warrant "cruelty to animals"? I don't understand how these places can be legal. Who could do that to an animal?

As for media....

The best one out there for attacking a cause and really sticking with it is Bill O'Reilly. If you get him on your side he'll tear into them.

Very good idea, as it so happens my last name is O'Reilly also hehe.
I will email him.

Also that commisioner voted againt it because of the barking, when it was decided that they would be debarked he was all for it.
It makes my blood boil.
If we can all get together and write a fancy email to Mr. O'Reilly that would be great. (I'm not so good at formal writing)

re: 'debarking' - my understanding is that they strip the vocal chords, leaving them so that there isn't any real volume to the barking, or noise they make. I've heard of breeders doing it because of complaining neighbors. As if family dogs don't bark too, in a neighborhood!

Hi,

I've written a quick letter to 60 Minutes outlining why this is so terrible and why it deserves their attention.

Please review it here: http://photo.michaelsteuer.com/60min.pdf

I will give you all to tomorrow to review and submit comments, then I will revise and send it off to CBS.

Please let me know what you think!

Best,

Michael.

This is the email I wrote to the CTV news. Canada's national news.

To Whom it May Concern:

I've just finished reading a news article, posted on the Morrison County Record website. I'm appauled to say the least. This is something that needs attention, emailing you is the only way I know how to go about helping.

They are approving 600 adult dogs, 10-16lbs each, to be housed on this land for breeding. They have decided it's not neccessary to have environmental checks on the land.
The "breeder" isn't even going to live onsite. To make matters worse, in order to control the noise from the barking, they are having the dogs de-barked. When a puppy mill breeder does this, it's generally a home operation, without painkillers, or sanitary conditions.
Because of the size of these dogs I can only assume they are lap dogs (shih tzu's, bishon frise, toy poodles, lhasa apso's etc.) these are small dogs, that need attention, care, and love. They will be bred from their first heat, until they become useless for breeding and then I can only imagine what will happen to them.

Please, please, call some attention to this here in Canada, we need to make it known that we do not approve of this. Here, and in the States they are experiencing over-crowding in shelters, having to euthanize thousands of pets each year. It has to be stopped. With enough support we can hopefully have it stopped.

Thank-you for reading,
Tina O'Reilly

They may pay attention. If I haven't heard from them by Monday, I will be sending another email to the editors.
