i just gave shaia a pig's ear and watched her chew on some of it and literally swallow the rest whole :shock: i always take her bully stix away when there's 2-3" left b/c she does the same thing and it comes out the other end whole :shock: (sorry)
i guess she won't be getting anymore pigs ears but now i'm worried about it getting impacted somewhere - does the stomach acid dissolve these or do they pass through? or can they get stuck?

My understanding has always been that a dog's system can digest or at least easily pass something like shreds of rawhide and smaller pigs ears. I stopped giving Ozzie bully sticks and similar rod shaped chew treats because he was swallowing 8 inch lengths, then the hard stick would poke his stomach from inside causing him to vomit.

So I'm not giving Ozzie any large ears or chew bones, only those small enough to pass easily should he swallow it whole. I used a bolt cutter and cut his remaining bully sticks into half inch pieces.

Yikes! I just gave Cali an 8" bully stick as a treat for getting her ears washed out and it seemed to disappear rather quickly. I'll have to keep an eye on her.

I hope Shaia is okay. I don't have any experience with giving Cali pig's ears, so don't know about their digestibility.

Dexter has had 1 pig's ear in his life...he did exactly what Shaia did. He was fine...I'd just keep an eye on her (that she continues to eat/poop normally. We never gave another one.

thanks, i feel better. she seems totally unfazed but i'll keep an eye on her. it reminded me of my rhodesian ridgeback several years back - at christmas time, my dad made 5 little cornish hens and set them on the table. we turned around for literally like 3 seconds and then there were 4, plus my dog licking her chops. she swallowed the entire bird WHOLE. i was kinda worried then too, but she slept it off and was totally fine
