we put gunner in a crate by the bed. the first three nights he woke up every 2-3 hours. the fourth night he slept five hours, and so on. I didn't need to set an alarm he woke like clock work himself. Good Luck, it really doesn't take too long for them to sleep through the night.
Peeing in the crate
My Murphey is about 7weeks old and is being crate trained. He has done fine for up to 3.5 hrs. However over the past 2 nights he has peed in his crate. I have heard two ideas on the long night hrs. One is to set your alarm to get up and take him out about 1/2 way through the night. The other is to let him wake us up when he has to go, so that he does'nt get into the habit of us getting up everynight. I am interested in hearing from some of you that may have had the same situation.

Hi. Wow, 7 weeks is a little young to be dependable about anything except kisses and chewing. My doods always went out just before bed, about 10:30pm. Until they were about 10 or 11 weeks they sometimes peed in their crate. I hate to confess this, but I didn't get up with them in the night at all, after the first week - mostly because it didn't seem to make a difference in whether they had an accident or not and they didn't wake me up. However, I was fastidious about cleaning up with enzymes, and to be honest, I did a lot of cleaning up that first two or three weeks.
Eventually they had dry nights and by about 13 weeks they were only rarely having accidents. A lot of it is just being patient until they grow up a little...they really do figure it out...some dogs earlier than others.

Thanks alot 2doodsmom, I have had several dogs in the past but never did crate training. I agree about holding him responsible at his age. I am still amazed at some of the things he has picked up on. He is great in the crate, he will gripe for about 3 minutes and then he is off to chewing or sleeping. I am glad in a way he doesnt wake me through the night and we have been cleaning his towels and blanket daily, thanks for the info, I will sure use it.2doodsmom said:Hi. I realize that it is probably longer when they are sleeping but its good to think about... their little bladders are so tiny still at that age!
We pull Sammy's water up an hour and a half before bed to help her.

Jamie, it sounds like you are doing a fine job. Your pup will be trained before you know it!

Sweet thanks for the web-site. Murphey has been doing great. He has gone up to six hours through the night. I am very impressed for a little guy his age. He only peed in his crate once since we have got him. He was a little older than most puppies when you first get them, he was about 11 weeks old.
He has been so good though lately *knocks on wood* no accidents in the house, has started going to the door when he has to go to the washroom and sleeps right through the night. Now this hasn't happened magically, as my wife and I are very careful to make sure we pay close attention to him, always repeat the very same actions and praise and follow the exact same steps when taking him outside. We always wipe his paws off when he comes in the house from being outside and he even stops at the towel now as he knows he will get a big hug and kiss when his feet have been wiped.
It just takes time and persistence. If there is one thing we have found out, it's that repetition is the key and works wonders!!

Hey thanks for the info. Murphey has been doing pretty good lately, actually he has been sleeping through the night, I honestly think I need to reduce his crate size a little bit. I understand the "room to turn around" thought. Gonna try that tonight.
