We also microchip all of our dogs. I chip the puppies too, before they leave to their new home.
My new vet (also a breeder) has said to do it at 5-6 weeks of age OR when they are out for surgery.
It is a good idea to list two references on the registration.
It is invaluable. If, God forbid, your puppy ever gets lost any vet/animal control officer can find you right away. If someone steals your puppy, when they take him to a vet, the vet will scan the chip and know that the pup isn't registered to the person bringing him in.
It is a very good thing to do.
The only long-term issue that I know of is that sometimes the chip migrates from the shoulder to different body parts. This isn't serious, at least I am not aware of it being serious.
I strongly support and recommend microchipping.

I have not heard this, Diane, but I am only going by my personal experience...Lexie's chip migrated to the side of her shoulder. It doesn't matter because I don't think it is a danger...but I can feel it. It is about the size of a grain of rice. (She had hers implanted about 2 years ago. They may do it differently now.)
