Murphy has been extremely itchy lately, specifically in the area around what appears to be "nipples" on his chest. My first question is, do male dogs have nipples and if so, why would they be so itchy? I have noticed that they are scabbing up almost on a daily basis...

If there is anything I can do to help him, I would love some thoughts.

ohhh yes

there is another site , and i would recommend ordering a catalog
www.kvvet.com
I have used also Mane and Tail Medicated shampoo you can get it at most farm stores
sounds like it could be caused by the dryness in the air from the heat, maybe
the mane and tail medicated should help no matter what it is

we had a dog once that had *really* sensitive skin -- like if she would lay on freshly cut grass, or on carpet that had recently been shampooed, she would break out in an itchy rash. the thing was, it took us a while to figure out that these triggers existed. once we had identified some things that caused the rash, the best way to control it was by avoiding the triggers, and using benadryl if we couldn't avoid them.

I think I'd wantto find out what the cause is...I'd do a vet visit. (I know, they will charge you and probably just guess but still, it might be something like an allergy or bites or maybe prickly bushe he is running through...)
Itching is not normal...my dogs often get bumps, but not itching. I would consider that it might be fleas or something.
Some things might relieve the itching, but others might burn or sting...so I'd just want to be sure what was causing it first.

Cinnamon has terrible itching problems, and while she doesn't have scabs, she will scratch until the hair is gone. We're still in the process of finding out exactly why she itches so bad, but she's slowed down tremendously after a switch in dog food.
We also bathe her with a shampoo with tea tree oil and then a tea tree oil rinse. (got it at Petsmart) These are not cheap, but it helps relieve her itching. Oatmeal does nothing for her.
I just got back from driving 80 miles to get her a bag of Canidae to try. I'll let you know of the results.

What we do for our animals, bahaahahahahah
Hope Canidae works for you as well as it did for us.
I talked to my vet about the scabby skin and she feels it is the shampoo
or not being rinsed off properly (which makes me feel like a bad mommy)
So I rinse him off much better and have bought a sensitive skin shampoo.

Thank you for the responses. We actually bought him Canidae last week, he loves it, but we haven't seen any itching relief yet. We tried benadryl which works well at night (b/c it makes him so sleepy), we are going to try the shampoo next week.

it can take a week or 2 ususally to see a difference when using new food.
and not ONLY dogs but us humans too if we don't rinse ALL shampoo out can have it's residual effect so to speak.

i hope you find relief for MURPHY soon as i know it's hard to figure out as well as watch your dog have a problem you can't fix immediately.
and like Jac said if it doesn't calm down soon and/or gets worse a vet might be able to guide and/or help you???
Sometimes food allergies are hard to spot along with allergies in dogs in general as it could be dust, mold etc. Allergies are hard to diagnose.so perhaps a switch in food and/or shampoo may help.

I do know Canidae is used alot with golden retrievers who can get skin and/or coat problems...some get hot spots.

For us, Max so far is doing digetsively well on Canidae along with his flaking almost completely gone, his coat shined back up, grew in more and wow shedding almost gone and he isn't lying around biting his skin and paws anymore. Also his ears are doing great too.
Canidae for us...HOWEVER these changes took time...week 1 some change but after week 2 major changes.
