My Springer just laid in the back seat.
When we got Bogie, we bought a really small crate on the way to the breeder. He's outgrown it!!!
This weekend we're taking him a few places. I want a crate in the back of my Tahoe which will be unusual for us when we never did this with any other dog before.

LindaMarie, there's a thread about this from several months ago. I got a halter for Chouette when she was little, and used it until she got the idea of what she was supposed to do in a car. I don't use anything now. I think the confinement would really bother her if I tried to snap her in again. I never used anything for my other dogs, either.

Chouette either rides in the passenger seat, sitting up or lying down, if I driving by myself, or else goes to the back seat and sits or lies there.

Maya used to ride in the backseat. I just bought an Explorer so I want to start putting her in the back. I have the bars to put up I just need to do that. Oh and get her used to it. She is afraid of the SUV right now!!

We're using a seatbelt harness that clips in to the back seat - before that we used the small traveling crate, but she already outgrew that :(

She didn't like it at first, but now she just lays down and chills out. :D

I use a crate....when small....and they have been loose
in the back seat..
generally lie down and chill.
Never hang out the windows....don't let them.

Back in the middle 70"s....I was following behind my husband
who was in his pick up with three pups in the cab in a box
on the seat....one tumbled out and was throwing up
on the seat, he reached over to get it back in the box
and hit a pot hole....the daddy setter was in the bed of the truck
and had decided to put his front feet up on the wheel well....
and his body build, with his chest out over the side of the truck....
sent him flipping over the side when Steve hit the hole in the road!!
It was HORRIBLE!!!! I was driving close behind and started to pull over and stop when I saw Scooter about to flip.
We happened to be driving past on old drive-in movie theater and Scooter took off across the expanse totally freaked out!
I had the mother dog with me and 3 more puppies,
who stayed inside their box....
The was before the days of harnesses for the car and seat belts
were not mandatory.....very few car seats for children, either....
again, not mandatory.

The vet visit we were headed to became about Scooter's scrapes
more than the new puppy checks we were there for.
Fortunately, he was basically fine.....but, very scary!
He told us he saw many dogs die from falls out of the back of a truck.
We never did that again!!

Guess I will invest in some harnesses for these two. I want them to be able to lie down with one one, though....will read the past thread again.
Thanks for posting it.

Sandy & Iris usually sit in the backseat. Sandy and Annie always fight for the seat on the drivers side, and Iris is content wherever she winds up - usually in the middle. If I have a car full of humans, the dogs are in the cargo area of my 4Runner.
