Okay, this is a rather involved story so let me start at the beginning...here is the history to my day's surprise:
I have 2 females (Lexie and Rosie) in heat. I can't let my male (Chase) near them because Rosie is not yet tested and Lexie can't have puppies because they would arrive in the same week that I am taking the Bar Exam...so I have a very frustrated and sad boy, he is so depressed that he won't eat and all he does is whine.
Now, add to that the fact that we have a litter of 10 puppies, nearly 6 weeks old...need I add, that they are very active and that they do love to leave poopies whenever they are out of the x-pen?
Well, in addition, Chase is really unnerved by all of the puppies when they start running around him, he loves them, but he can't keep an eye on each one when they are swarming him and weaving in and out of his legs, which they do, of course...so he gets this "deer in the headlight look" and starts to panic when they are loose and we put him safely behind the gate so he can just watch them.
Now...besides that...Bayley (the mother to this litter) has been trying to wean them for 3 days now...the pups literally cut her up with their sharp teeth and nails when they try to nurse; so, the pups are doing well on the weaning food and we are letting Bayley's milk dry up...and she has teats that weigh as much as she does...which I am certain are painful...not to mention that she leaves white puddles everywhere she goes.
So, now to the story about my surprise. I secured the house while I left to go do a little shopping...I was gone about 2 hours, the dogs in heat were locked in the garage...Chase and Bayley were in the main part of the house and the 10 puppies were enclosed in the x-pen in the dining room. the dining room, living room and kitchen are all one huge room...the dogs were each in their own place.
Right.
Well, upon my return from shopping, Chase started barking, I opened the door to see two frazzled dogs, Chase and Bayley, excitedly jumping around to avoid 10 wandering, pooping puppies! They had escaped!
Poop and pee everywhere! Worse yet, I worried that Chase might have stepped on one because he is very big...and a bit clumsy...so I scurried out to the garage to let Lexie and Rosie out...but I had forgotten to shut the doggie door...and they had been free to roam the yard and bark their little heads off while I was gone! (The neighbors already love us. :? )
I brought them in the office, shut the door, took Bayley and Chase outside, locked them in the garage, let Rosie and Lexie out of the office, but put the gate up in the hallway so that they wouldn't bother the puppies...and I went to find out why I heard howling in the puppy pen area...
Well, 9 of the 10 pups were out. There was one, lone puppy ...still locked in the pen...howling to beat the band!
Judging from the drying poop, they had been out and free the entire time I was gone!
Well, I put them into the x-pen and every last one went fast asleep!
So did Lexie and Rosie...in the hall way...and Chase and Bayley in the garage.
I cleaned up the poop and pee...and sat on the deck...thinking that no one would believe my day...except for my friends on the forum.
And people say that dog breeding is an easy job!
