My Holly is nearly 6 months old now, with nearly a complete set of brand sparkling new grownup teeth. She has discovered she can use them to chew through any leash I give her. She's been pulling on our walks a lot lately, so I brought her one of those Easy Walk harnesses. I put it on her, left her for 2 minutes while I rounded up the kids, and when I got back it was dangling around her legs. Yup, she chewed right thru it. She has since chewed through another (cheaper) harness, 3 regular nylon leashes, 2 Flexi-leashes, and a leather leash. Right now I'm using a thick leather strap attached to a chain ( my husband made this)-- it looks like a Nazi Fighting Pit Bull torture device but it's the only thing she won't chew.

HELP! Does anyone know of a strong, good leash she won't destroy?? I love the Flexi leashes but they are getting expensive! And oh yes I've tried bitter apple spray (she loves the taste) and even coated the Flexi with cayenne pepper. Didn't even slow her down. I will send the Easy Walk back for another (they said I could do this)-- but I know she'll only chew through it again! Any ideas????

Remy is 11 months and has chewed through quite a few leashes. Right now we don't have her attached to a leash unless we're attached to the other end. She really likes to jump up and try to bite the leash when we're walking. I make her sit for a time out and then we begin walking again. I think it's a game to her because now she'll jump up to bite the leash and then immediately go into a sit. The most effective way to make her stop is if I'm walking with my kids, Remy has to stay in a sit while they keep walking. It drives her crazy and she walks nicely until she catches up with everyone else.

wow...i just realized i have gone thru 3 doodle puppyhoods and not one leash chewed through yet

big thing I do or like Vanessa said: Training.

the only time the leash is on them is when i am at the other end.
inside the house the leashes have always been put up high

but i do know in past when i had them tethered to me, if they tried to bite the leash a quick NO and then praise them afterwards seemed to work
for me but 6mos they

now my rug and a couple pair of slippers are another story for another time

When I first got Jonah (and pre-fence), he was a leash eater. It was my fault for ignoring him while talking to my neighbor in the back yard. He only did it for attention and he was fast and stealth. Luckily he never ran off....oh those were the days!!
Fortunately he never did it on walks.

How about one of these?

Probably a bit heavier than a regular leash, but it could get you thru the "teenage years".
You can also make a leash with a shorter chain segment using a regular leash, a choke chain, and something like a double ended bolt snap (which looks like this):

(Super cheap at hardware stores- like $3.)
And you do this: Leash--clipped to--outstretched choke chain--clipped to--bolt snap--clipped to dog's collar. Voila! :D
(Saw it in a magazine once i think.)

I agree w/Vanessa and Annmarie. Dex would try to chew on his leash as a young puppy. We would only leash him when we were there to supervise and about to go on a walk. We sprayed the leash w/bitter apple to deter chewing and would correct him when he chewed. Then on the walk he would start jumping up to bite the leash. We corrected him (treat for sitting and not biting). Just keep being consistent and it will improve.

Thanks for the ideas! I tried some of them today on our walks-- whenever Holly got the leash between her teeth I would make her sit for 20 seconds or so until she let go, then we continued...I think she got it after a while. I also found that if she can hold a stick or her Chuckit toy while walking, it deters her from chewing on the leash! Must be a lab thing, she just loves to have stuff in her mouth! :)

My Iris is like this - while she doesn't usually chew through things, she HAS to have something in her mouth while she walks or else she walks ME by holding onto the leash in her mouth - people think its hysterical, and I just roll my eyes.

Leashes haven't been our problem though there are teeth marks
in most of them but car harnesses have.
So far Lucee has chewed through two car harnesses and
one Jeep (car) seatbelt. She does it nice and quietly and
when you go to let her out of the car you are faced with the damage.
My BH is slowly getting over the seatbelt (which has to be replaced)
and is heaps more expensive than a harness.

We have moved them to the cargo section with a barrier.
This seems to be working. They are still harnessed and have
shortened leads on(old ones).

I have been told by my trainer that they go through a second
teething period between 6 and 9 months depending on the breed
I hope this is a passing phase.......

PS We got Lucee end of november just before Xmas and
were putting up the Christmas tree when we realised that
she had chewed the plug off the lights. We just threw the
lights back in the box and will worry about a new set next year.......

Got to love those puppy teeth hahaha

Luke has chewed through 4 harnesses. We get the heavy duty nylon types and he shreds them. Now he is chewing on EVERYTHING!!! If there is somethingo n the floor, he chews on it!! He's 7 1/2 months, so I don't think he has his baby teeth still. He has also chewed the door frame around the ;aundry room where he stays during the day. I've used the bitters sprays before and sometimes it works and soemtimes it doesn't. Any suggestions to get him to quit chewing??
