Hi Lisa, I have no ideas but I know what you are talking about. It is terrifying.
The only thing I can suggest is to keep your dogs in a crate if you won't be with them until they settle down. That is not an easy thing to do, but if it keeps them safe, it is worth the effort.
Good luck and if you find another solution, please let me know.
(You might also train them to stay away from that area...it will take some doing, especially when you are not in the room...but it can be done.)

You know, I just happened to think about a "pad" that I have seen that gives a slight electrical shock when the dog is on it...maybe putting one of those on the floor near the window would help. I don't like the idea of shocking them...but if it is shocking them or having them go through the window...I would vote for the shock!

I think that the collar is a good idea in this instance. I have actually heard of dogs crashing through windows and going after people...so I know it can happen. It is just too scary to contemplate.
What about putting a huge sheet of plexiglass in front of the window...one larger than the window so that it doesn't connect to the glass when they run into it?
That wouldn't really fix the problem though...I think you are right to do what you need to in order to train him not to do that. It is just too scary!
Maybe hiring a trainer to come to your home and help out...
But I think the colar will work. I have never tried one, but I have been very tempted. It comes down to the shock verses the consequence to the behavior and you have to decide which is most acceptable. Tough, tough choice.
Good luck!
