I came home from work today and Miko has a green discharge in her right eye. Other than throwing up a stick this morning, she's he rambuncious self and is eating right now. I figure it's an eye infection, or she caught my cold? Since it's the weekend, can I just give her the amoxicillin I have from her bladder infection. I'm going to call the vet on Monday, but til then....what do you all think??

Thanks in advance....you guys are the best!!

usually with an eye infection they give antibiotic cream - at least they did for our lab that had one dont know if Amox would help for the eye or not

Hope she is ok

Does your vet have a callback service where you can call and ask them - make sure it's not a scratch

Just found out.....my vet recommends the emergency clinic in Akron for after hours consultation! It's an hour away, and not an emergency....so I guess I'll keep a eye (no pun intended) on her eye, and see how it is when I get home from work at noon tomorrow. If it's still bad, I'll find a clinic a little closer........ :x

Cali had a weekend goopy eye last spring. Fortunately my after hours clinic wasn't as far away. After reading an article online I decided not to wait. They prescribed an antibiotic ointment for the infection after also checking for a scratch. I hope the information is helpful and hope Miko's eye infection clears up soon!

Miko, tell your dad my mom gave me a treat every time she put the medicine in my eye, so it was okay. Your brother Jonah will probably want a sympathy treat. Your friend, Cali.

Hope she is better in the am, if not hopefully you will find a clinic closer - even if she is better, you might want to look for one so you know where it is for future use.

we are lucky to have a emerg clinic about 20 minutes away - fortunately we have not had to use it, but AB's friend Sascha has been there several times and they are very good so it's good to know.

Poor Miko!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have any boric acid???????
I have used that for my cats with green discharge and have
been told it is good for dogs.
One teaspoon to 1 cup of lukewarm water.
Dip a cotton ball and wipe the eye.

Gene...I'd keep checking it and maybe wash it with warm water only. But if it's still bad in the morning well i'd go to the clinic.

and I wouldn't give her your antibiotics. keep us update ok? thanks!!
hope you and MIKO feel better as i only know too well how us doodle parents worry

The clinic my cousin goes to actually has Sunday hours. they're a little more expensive, but not emergency hospital expensive. They're open 9-4 on Sunday, and it's about a 1/2 hour from here. So, if she's still discharging tomorrow, I'll call and take her in after work. Thanks for all the advice and concern.

hey, Gene, sorry about your gunky eye!
I would hold off on systemic antibiotics cuz my vet has only ever treated it with drops or ointments, topically.

Honestly, I think it probably can wait, but how about going to the pharmacy and asking a pharmacist about suggestions for drops to keep it at bay until you can see a vet? My Walmart Pharmacist was very helpful with dosing Benadryl for Jasmine when I thought she had a wasp sting. OR, how about going to a Banfield clinic at a Petsmart? If you can't wait that would be an option. I would see a vet, and get a prescription, but I wouldn't call this serious enough for an emergency clinic an hour away unless Miko took a serious turn for the worst.

The good news is that the small bottle of drops will be on hand for the next time this happens, for either of your kiddos.

Thanks Maureen. I had to get up for a 5:30am shift this morning, took the kids out to potty, and Jonah cleaned her face before I had a chance to check her eye! I'll stop at the pharmacy on the way home and see if they can help....then off to my regular vet tomorrow morning AM. Since he's (jonah) licked her eye, if it's an infection....made need a bigger dose of whatever the vet gives us!

hey gene, my vet says oral antibiotics really do nothing for an eye infection so save those for another time. like maureen i always have a bottle around for times like this!! in the meantime WASH YOUR HANDS A LOT! it is contagious and you an jonas can both get it! use a washcloth with warm water and wipe the gunk, it is possible it could go away but usually they do not. if the vet says treat just the infected eye I highly suggest you do both!! learned the hard way on that one :) she will be fine dont spend the extra money going to emergency.

Nurse Jonah is using doggy medicine on her today. He started this morning before I had time to check it out! I stopped on the was home from work and bought some eye wash just to keep it clean. Of course, jealous Jonah had to have his eyes washed out to.....he would NOT let me by til I put some in his eyes also....even though I could tell he hated it! Go figure! After all this, Nurse Jonah gave not only her eye a cleaning, but her whole face, both ears and her neck. Now she's wet and smells like wet slobbery dog! Guess it means he really loves his sister!!
We are going to the vet in the morning. With him licking the eye, I'm wondering if he'll get something also?
