Hi All,

My Labradoole has a definite poodle, matting hair. She has been with me for 3 years now and I have fought the awful undercoat causing matting all this time even though I try to comb her every or every other day. Groomers seem to rather shave these beautiful pets instead of taking the time to comb them out. They are so beautiful with their full glory of hair though.

Anyway, At PetCo. I bought "the ultimate touch", mat removing comb last week and believe me, this is a priceless tool! I usually comb her with a rake comb every other day, but for bad mats, you do need more help which this inexpensive tool gives. These mats seem to appear more near the tail area for some reason. It is so painless and a perfect solution I finally came upon by accident.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Do you have a url for the brush you're using? Chouette's coat is driving me crazy. The groomer I'm using now has left her coat long the two times we've been there, and suddenly it's matting like mad. I don't know whether she's blowing her puppy coat, at 11 months, or whether this is just what I'm going to have to deal with from now on. It never used to be a problem. I have bought a long pin brush and the narrower purple LesPoochs brush, but the only thing that really seems to work is a sort of chevron-shaped tool with a single row of rakes that Maureen recommended to me. And even then, I think I've finally conquered the mats by her jaw and on her back and the next time I'm stroking her I can feel them again. Or others.

I have to tell you that when Chouette goes to the groomer's tomorrow I'm going to ask her to cut her shorter, and hopefully we can finally see the last of some of those persistent tangles.

Hi All,

The dematting comb I bought is Ultimate Touch from www.fourpaws.com thought I bought it at Pet Co locally.

Carole, I did a search when I first read your post, and there are quite a few different types of Ultimate Touch combs. Some are for cats, even. They have different colored handles, too. So that's why I asked for specifics.

Hi Leslie,

Manchego started getting matted at 8-9 months when his puppy coat was growing out and his adult/more curly coat was growing in at the base. It was almost like he was growing dreadlocks. Since I shaved him he has been a lot better. I was away for a week at Christmas and my husband didn't brush him once while I was away... I spent at least 3-4 hours getting his coat ito the point where I could even get a shaver through w/ out cutting him down all the way to the skin. Now I can brush him for 10min once a week and he's fine.

:)

Thanks, Carole! And Sarah, that's reassuring. I've been brushing her every day and getting a lot of soft fur off with no noticeable difference in the condition of her coat. Here's hoping the current mat madness is just due to puppy coat blowing or whatever. If not I'm going to look for that comb!

Thanks for this info. so so so much..

Monet is starting to mat very easily behind her legs under her chin , and on top of her head..

Kelsey never mats & kozmo never mats eiher..we have had it easy with the bath time ritual of only having to dry them and brush Kelsey...

Kozmo used to get trimmed by us, but since we have half the town going to our local groomers, they are giving us a big discount on Kozmo...

I know if I bring Monet they will have to trim her to nothing....
So will this be my miracle brush comb , slicer dicer, chopper...I am desperate to keep Monet from not looking like an allien dog...haa haa..

love learning new things every day...

Here is a picture of one of the De-matting combs by Four Paws.
I have something similar....mine sort of saws the mat out and you only
get the matt, instead of a chunk...easier than just scissor cutting it out.
Not so tough on the dog as trying to brush out a really stubborn one.

Well, I brought Chouette in and they trimmed her to nothing - she looks like a different dog. DH kept saying, "Are you sure this is our puppy?" Long spider legs - at least I can see that she's really not overweight around the middle, as I had feared. I'll post pictures as soon as it's light enough to take some. The groomer says we'll probably have to do this periodically, but Sarah's experience is different. I hope ours is more like Sarah's! I don't like having to deal with a shorn critter and a radically different look in my beloved pup.

I may grab one of these to try on Dexter...he has a fleece coat, but he has some mats on his front and has a grooming appt on Monday (with a new girl  ) and I don't want to risk the "oh we'll have to shave him" (I know they aren't that bad)...maybe I can make a little progress with something like what you posted - I'll let you know how it goes.

I want to know about this too!!
Truffle's coat has never been clipped, or 'groomed' and it's thick woolly, and BEAUTIFUL if you ask me but she's got all these tangles, all of a sudden, so I think that's what you are seeing with Chouette, Leslie. Oh, and we have brown fluffy clumps of fur on the carpet? From our 'non-shedding' girl?! What's up with that? lol.

thanks, Carole!

Chouette looks just as beautiful as ever!!
Different, but still so pretty. She is sitting so sweetly for you!
She'll grow out fairly fast. Your groomer did a good job, I think.

Thanks, Jane! I think the groomer does a good job, too. My only beef with her is the time she takes. She's about twenty minutes away, and our appointments are always for 9:30, which is when she opens. I've been trying to run errands in that area rather than going home, so I go another fifteen minutes toward the shore where there's a bookstore, a supermarket, and a Marshall's, and I poke around there. But when I called her at almost noon to ask how we were doing she said she needed her for at least another hour, and we were supposed to have lunch with friends at 1 p.m. I told her that and she said I could pick her up at 12:45, but of course we still didn't get out of there until one by the time I asked her to even out her mutton chops and I wrote the check. I know she had to do a lot this time, but still....

Anyway, all that was $50 - more than usual but still cheap at the price.

She also told me there's another black labradoodle in the area, new to her, who's as sweet as Chouette - she doesn't like the other ones she grooms. So she's going to ask the owner if she can give me her number and maybe we can get them together. Chou needs playmates!

Do you want Dex that short? I prefer a longer look and can't wait until there's a bit more fur; she looks so poodle-like now! But I think it really helps to have photos of the look you want; I brought those guidelines that were referenced here awhile ago, for this groomer, and we could talk about which version I wanted. Petsmart didn't do that.
