Does anyone supplement their doodle's diet with glucosamine? I've heard this helps the joints even if the dog is not arthritic (may prevent?). Just wondering if this is a common practice for dogs of all ages.

I asked my vet about glucosamine when I first got my puppy. She said her experience has been that if a dog has been on it for years then it is not as effective when the dog really does need it. I know others have differing opinions but for now I have decided not to use it.

Napa's on glucosamine. But, he's already got joint problems at the age of 11 months. He's doing well on it, and we're definitely hearing less popping from his hips, and we're hoping that its protecting his front legs.... So, I would say to not use it unless you've noticed something that requires protection...

I don't give Nicky glucosamine or any other supplements. My vet has never said anything about supplements and I don't like to give (or take!) medicines when they aren't necessary.

I've noticed that alot of the food designated specifically for "large breed" dogs has glucosamine in it. I was thinking that instead of buying "large breed" dog food I would supplement with glucosamine. We are feeding candidae chicken and rice and she loves it but because of the risk of hip dysplasia in large breed dogs we thought that supplementing with glucosamine might be a good thing rather than bad....

It is nice to hear what others who have standard size doodles think and/or are doing....

Thanks!

it may or may not help..doctor s can t even be certain if it can relieve my joint pain..but, they say it certainly won t hurt to add it to my diet..

IMO..it s the same way with animals..maybe and maybe not..

the wife swear s by it..for me i don t see any difference in my condition..

I just went to buy Layla her first bag of adult food. (She's a year old now).
The nutritionist where I bought it said since she's only 57lbs, that glucosamine isn't important so to just go with the regular adult food, not large breed. He said large breed is really for dogs 70lbs and over.
I am wondering now if I should supplement it or put her back on large breed after reading this...or maybe all of you have 70lb + doodles? :?
