FOUR WEEKS this dog has lived with us, and he only NOW sees the bird?

He is petrified! He cries like a baby when he sees the parakeet and curls up under my legs. Or better yet, he tries to get behind me! I had surgery on my lower back on Thursday - he's killing me scrambling behind me!

I'm shaking my head in amusement and shame at my scaredy cat dog!

Ah, I wondered where you had been. Back surgery - ugh! - are you OK? How are you getting around? Do you have help? So sorry to hear this! I wish you a speedy recovery, Kristin!!

And as for Mr. Sandy - that's a riot; he's just seeing your bird now!! I wonder what on earth he thought it was over the last month - it HAD to have crossed his radar, it just didn't make that much of a blip, I guess!! :D

Feel better............

I'm getting around ok. I had a 7cm benign tumor that had to be removed. I was living with it fine until I started sitting in chairs with hard backs. It caused the area to get infected and it turned nasty, really really quickly. I couldn't even sit in the car it was so painful. My mother drove in from Jersey when I called her from the ER on Thursday AM and took Annie for me for the weekend. That was really all the help I needed. I don't like anyone near me when I'm sick or hurt. I get mean.  Sandy is all the "help" I can handle! My doctor knows me well enough to know he shouldn't send me home until he knew I could get around on my own. Stubborn and overly independent is what he called me when I was signing out.

Sorry to hear about your back problems. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Glad Sandy is being good therapy.
When we go to Petsmart, Jonah always parks it right in front of the parakeet cage. He loves them.

You poor thing!!!!
I am so glad that you are on the mend.
I have back problems too, but no surgery.
Your puppy is so funny with the delayed reaction
to the bird. My cats sit in an enclosed area in our yard
and chirp and talk to the birds all the time. If they get really loud,
Denver sits with them and cries at the birds, I think he is
confused as to whether he is a dog or a cat sometimes.
Bahahhaaaaaa!!!!

Oh, my goodness! I am glad you are recovering and that you are back at home!
You know, it could be a "fear" stage for your dog...but, heck, I'd take full advantage...think of the things you can train him to stay away from if you only put the bird on top of it! (garbage cans, door thresholds, laundry baskets...) That bird would be a gold mine if all the dogs were afraid! hahahahaha....sorry that it is hurting you...but it really is a hilarious thought!

Glad to hear you're on the mend Kristen....just take it easy and try not to do too much too soon!
Wish Raleigh was like Sandy! We have a cockatiel that hasn't come out of his cage since the Doodle arrived...he's WAAYYYY too interested in him, and I'm afraid he's step on him and kill him.....not on purpose mind you, but Raleigh likes to play rough...he flies off the deck when he see's a Robin in the back yard, or any bird for that matter...must be the Lab in him...altho I think I read somewhere that Poodles were once used for hunting dogs too....
Stay well! :D

Jac - after the afternoon we had, I think you might be on to something with this fear stage thing. Sandy had a little encounter with a lawnmower today - and when I say that I mean the lawnmower was going in my NEIGHBORS yard and he was tied up in mine. He started freaking out when my neighbor turned on the lawnmower - running as fast as he could to get away, then flipping over and over fighting the lead trying to get away from it. All while crying and screeching like someone was beating him. Now I can't get him to go to the bathroom! He peed earlier tonight before it got dark, but is refusing to poop. As soon as we walk outside his tail goes between his legs and he starts crying. I need to go to sleep soon. I can't put him to bed without pooping!

He will get over this, right? ACK!

I'm with Jac on the fear stage of development. How old is Sandy? The second fear impact period occurs between the ages of 6 and 14 months. It's not a constant thing, but can cause a sudden reaction to something that has not bothered a dog before. Dogs can slide in and out of the fear reaction to things during this age range, and it's said that the fear period can frequently correspond to growth spurts. Is any of this going on in Sandy's life?

Glad you're on the mend. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Raleighsmom, you are right. Poodles are water retrievers. The standards and minis are still great retrievers, though the drive has been largely bred out of the toys. The word Poodle comes from the German Pudel, or water. The French word for poodle is caniche, which derives from canard, or duck. I met a guy who put his mini poodle through a breed championship, then took her duck hunting just for grins, and said she did great!

Thanks for confirming what I had read Deb! Both breeds are wonderful, but to have them combined in our Doodles...well you know...we've got the best of both worlds!!!! :D

Deb, Sandy is almost 13 weeks. He is still a baby. But wow, what a reaction he had to those 2 things!

Kristin, So sorry you needed surgery! I hope you recover quickly! I wonder if the lawn mower hurt Sandy's ears, along with scaring her. I'm sure she will get over it by the end of the summer ...and then she'll probably be scared again next Spring. :D

Ah, thirteen weeks. He's just coming into the "seniority classification period," which will go on for about the next three weeks. This is when he begins testing and establishing his dominance and position in the pack, to have definite opinions about things and may fight to defend them. It's an essential time to find the right puppy school and to establish yourself as the leader. He'll need the right guidance from you now, as well as the exposure to other puppies, handling and discipline from other people, that will happen in the right puppy school environment. Nice that you catch this in the spring when the weather is nice!

This doesn't really explain the fear reaction, perhaps it was an expression of independence, or maybe a sound from the lawn mower that is out of our range, but bothers him. Nani, for one, chased, and in her later years chased and bit, vacuum cleaners. I thought my cleaning lady was exaggerating until I tried it myself. There must have been something painful in the sound. I thought for years that it was a game, as Everything else in her life managed to be (Unflappable Joie de Vivre!!!), but I'm not sure there wasn't another issue in play.
