Right now it looks like this is the only recall issued of dry food so far: Hill's Pet Nutrition Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry Cat Food
Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recall didn't involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products, said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co.
They won't name the company that sold and shipped the contaminated wheat gluten to Menu Foods and Science Diet. Why not?
And why it it taking weeks before the recall occurs? The FDA knows what company shipped the bad gluten.....they must know what companies received and used the wheat gluten!!!! How many more received and used the contaminated wheat gluten? And how do you call and ask if your company uses this supplier of wheat gluten if you don't know the company name? Shame on the FDA!!!!!!!! Shame on these pet food manufacturers!!!!!! They had to know they had the same supplier of wheat gluten as Menu Foods, right????
Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Single Product, Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry Food, Only Product Containing Wheat Gluten
Topeka, KS (March 30, 2007) - In accordance with its over-riding commitment to pet health and well-being, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry represents less than one half of one percent of all Hill's products.
This is the only product Hill's currently sells in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet® or Science Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. Together with this earlier withdrawal, less than 1% of all Hill's products have been affected.
The voluntary recall of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from sellers. This recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food which contains no wheat gluten.
Consumers should stop using this product and return it for a refund. All Hill's products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled product.
Hill's expects to resume shipment shortly of a reformulated version of this highly beneficial product that will not contain wheat gluten. Please check with your veterinarian for an alternative Prescription Diet until m/d Feline dry is reformulated and made available again.
Following is a list of Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry products included in this recall:

MGP Ingredients' Wheat Gluten Not Linked to Major Pet Food Recall
ATCHISON, Kan., March 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tim Newkirk,
president and chief operating officer of MGP Ingredients, Inc. (Nasdaq:
MGPI), a leading U.S. producer of wheat gluten, today issued a statement
emphasizing that the company has no link to the pet food recall involving
Canadian-based Menu Foods. Although tests are still underway, the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration has reported that it suspects contaminated wheat
gluten to be the possible ingredient that has led to the recall.
"I want to assure pet owners, our customers, stockholders and employees
that the safety and quality of wheat gluten produced by MGP Ingredients is
not in question and that our product is not associated with this sad and
unfortunate situation," Newkirk said. "MGP Ingredients, which manufactures
wheat gluten at plants in Atchison, Kansas and Pekin, Illinois, is among a
small handful of domestic producers of gluten. This, combined with the fact
that the gluten supplier to Menu Foods has not yet been disclosed and
because certain media reports have fueled speculation and concern that a
'Kansas supplier' may be the source of the gluten in question, have caused
people to inquire whether MGPI is involved. The answer is a definite no."
Newkirk acknowledged that MGPI has done business with Menu Foods in the
past, noting that the company's last shipment of wheat gluten to Menu
occurred over 18 months ago. "We have gone through periods in recent times
where we have been forced to curtail our production and sales of wheat
gluten due to economic and trade factors that have not allowed us to
compete effectively with lower cost gluten imports," Newkirk said. "MGPI
has produced gluten since the 1950s and we pride ourselves in our expertise
and our high standards of quality," he added.
The company's wheat gluten is sold for use mainly as an ingredient for
improving the rising ability and textural qualities of bread and other
bakery products. MGPI has also pioneered the development of a number of
specialty wheat proteins and starches for use in multiple food systems, as
well as pet treats, biopolymers and personal care products. The company
additionally produces food grade alcohol for beverage and industrial
applications, as fuel grade alcohol, commonly known as ethanol.
