Sam has quite a few toys and while he will willingly play with them when I'm around, he won't play with them when he's crated or if he's outside alone with them. I can't be with him 24/7 and he seems disinterested in his toys when I'm not around. Any advice on how I can train him to be play when I'm not around?

Well, Annmarie is right about that!
Since having Abby, Coco and she play all the time
....and wear each other out!
I crate Abby when I am not here and
even for nap time... since she isn't housetrained yet.....
( we are working on it diligently,
but she can't be trusted at all yet. )

I wouldn't worry about Sam not playing
when you are gone....If he isn't a power chewer yet,
those hooves that are smoked are long lasting and
maybe he would chew on it in the crate....if you crate him.
I would watch him while you are home sometime
and see if he can splinter it while gnawing on it though...
if so, leaving it with him while away,
wouldn't be a good idea with no supervision.
Otherwise, just play when you are home.

Coco never chews anything, and doesn't play until I get home.
I think it is seperation anxiety, though she doesn't
go beserk when I leave her anymore. She sleeps.
Puppies need to sleep a lot.

Don't worry about Sam....
he's probably just fine not playing.
Another doodle right now, may be too much!!
I can understand that,
though I am amazed at how much easier
~in some ways~ this whole puppy thing is with two!

Sam is still being housetrained so yes I'm crating him to help the process along. Having said that, I was so impressed in the last couple of days. Sam was playing and suddenly stopped and went to the door. I thought he was being naughty but he actually stopped at the door and sat down. (I always make him sit at the door before we go out, whether it's to potty or play) I took him out on the off chance he needed to go and I was amazed that he actually did potty. :D The first time it happened, it thought it was a coincidence. The second time, it may still be a coincidence. If he does it again, it's no coincidence. What a clever doodle!

Anyway, I digress. Perhaps you're both right about another doodle but not right now. Sam is the first dog I've ever owned and while I think I'm doing ok as a first time doodle dad, methinks a second might really challenge me. I will continue to leave toys in his crate and outside. If he plays, he plays. If he doesn't, oh well...

:)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't think our doodles do anything when we aren't here. We leave chew toys for Dex when we go to work, and I often find the toy in the same place. I think they just sleep when we're not here (although I would love to do a doodle cam) :)

I would not worry either
Denver sleeps a lot when we are not here
and does not seem to play too much with anything...............

Oh my  the beginnings of house-training at 11 weeks. I'm impressed! Well I have read that doodles are VERY clever. Sam continues to amaze and delight me. :D What a fabulous experience for a first time doodle dad.

Congrats Sam - good boy for going to the door to go out to potty !

Annabelle plays some when we are gone, but she sleeps a lot - most of the time when we get home she comes down the stairs stretching and yawning, just waking up from nappy time

Yes, I agree with Vanessa!!
Sam is really getting it and you should be proud!!
:D
I think my 9 week old is getting it, only vaguely.....
hopefully, soon she will go to the door to "tell"
us she needs to go out!!
She has once, so I didn't really count it....
since she has made several mistakes inside since! :(
