We just put a deposit on a new puppy!! Its a surprise to my wife, but i dont think she reads the board so its ok to spill the beans here. Excitedly, we have 1st pick of the litter. What do you think the colour possibilities will be given the mom is a chocolate lab, from a chocolate and black lab parents. The stud poodle is a red standard.......and genetics people kow what we could get?

Here is my shot at genetics (I should be better with a BSc in biochemistry!) The chocolate lab should be bbEE (ie not carrying yellow since it was a chocolate x black cross). If the apricot stud has a black nose he is BBee, or Bbee. This will mean a litter that is all black or 1/2 black and 1/2 brown. The previous litter with a yellow lab doesnt help, since ee would make entire the litter cream, as we saw. If he has a liver nose, he is bbee and the puppies will be all brown. The only way to get some cream (and variations on cream like red) is if the chocolate lab carries yellow.

We would be very happy with another chocolate (although if there is a red we will snap it up so fast!)

Todd, it truly frightens me that I followed your genetics explanation. I loved doing the genetics charts in biology! I even used them to show my daughter how it was possible for her to have blue-green eyes when I have brown and her father has blue!

Red is very popular but it is hard to get a deep red that doesn't fade, I'd say whatever color she will be very happy a doodle is a doodle no matter the color!!!

I have a red st poodle that is ready now and an F1 that just came into heat I hope to produce some red pups out of them wish me luck. I want some reds soooo baadddd.

What a wonderful gift you are giving your wife!
I only know the genetics and colors of some of my dogs because I actually had them DNA tested for color!
Sounds like you have it right to me...only I am thinking that it is possible that the Lab had BbEE, since he is a chocolate X black cross, so that might bring some brown pups too...or am I lost in space somewhere? (Nevermind...don't answer that! hahahaha)
But, speaking as a dog owner/breeder who originally wanted cream colored dogs...my black pups and dogs have stolen my heart...and I think that they are gorgeous!
