LeeBeth,

Well we haven't ruled anything out. I brought stool to the vet and she said she didn't want to run any tests yet. My husband and I were surprised but she said thinks its a sensitive stomach. She wanted to wait until the first week of March to see how he does. To be honest that bothered us so much that we talked about not seeing her anymore. Dunkin seems to be having a good day today. Maybe he had eaten something outside that I didn't see and that upset his stomach. We have been giving him a lot of water...we were concerned about dehydration. We have given liver treats before. Is there a problem with them? Please tell me more about that.

Cassie-
I'm also surprised that your vet didn't run a fecal. They are really easy to do and only take 5 minutes. Especially since he's a puppy and parasites are so common. Have you ever had Toby's stool sample looked at? I would either push for that or try another vet. Most vets run fecals first before doing anything else or changing the diet. It's possible that he could have gotten into something outside that didn't agree with him. I think its great that you're encouraging him to drink water to combat dehydration. We also gave Summer unflavored pedialyte when the diarrhea was really bad. Summer really liked liver treats, but they also gave her diarrhea. A lot of people say that liver gives their dogs soft stool. I'm not sure if its that, or if it is because Summer has a beef intolerance (and its beef liver I was giving her). I would definately stop the liver treats. There are lots of treats out there for dogs with sensitive stomachs. I like Zuke's treats and Buddy Biscuits. Good luck and keep us posted.

Cassie, No problem with liver treats that I know of. I just know that they precipitated Toby's 2nd serious bout because they were too rich I guess :?: I haven't been giving him any thing other than the Hill's Prescription I/D until yesterday when I started the EaglePack and EaglePack treats. So far, so good. If I were you I would insist on the Giardia test. Someone here knows the name of it....Early stage giardia is apparently pretty hard to detect. I had to push my vet to do enough testing to satisfy me, but I think I can rest assured now that it is a sensitive stomach. Is Dunkin still eating heartily? If he's eating and drinking plenty I wouldn't worry too much. I just had to rule everything out for my peace of mind. I don't know that we did all the right things, but we have gone over a week now with no "d"....good luck to precious Dunkin.

The name of the giardia test is ELISA. It stands for enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. It looks for the presence of the specific giardia antigen. I think everyone with diarrhea problems should have this done, even if a regular fecal floatation gives a negative result for giardia. Giardia cysts aren't shed in every bowel movement, and they are also hard to see sometimes on a fecal floatation slide. But, if giardia cysts are found in a regular fecal floatation, then you won't have to pay for the ELISA giardia test! The vet's office I worked at charged $50 (I think?) to send the poop to the lab for the ELISA test. Some vets have the SNAP giardia test (made by IDEXX labs) which is also very reliable. It's definitely worth it to rule giardia out since it is easily treatable.

I too had diarrhea problems starting at 11 months. I thought it was because I was gone from Jo for 24 hours and having someone new feed her, etc. I took her to the vet and got x-rays taken and received pills, which did eliminate the diarrhea but a few weeks later ist happened again. The vet suggested switching her from Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy to a Sensitive formula. So since she was now 1 year old I found Natural Choice Sensitive Stomach. No more diarrhea since then but she was throwing up long after the meals. when I had given her a bit of my hard cooked egg it came up in vomit, another time it was a carrot. Now, thanks to the comments before, I only give her for treats the Buddy Biscuits. Now no vomitting. So if this doesn't continue, then I find an Eagle distributor. I'm grateful to this forum for everyone's help.

Glad Dunkin is better. Is he on Eagle Pack, too? How is Toby doing? Sawyer had a loose stool issue earlier this week and I decided to try the pumkin remedy and it worked! He really liked the taste of it, too! Great tip!

Dakota also had a diarrhea problem. It turned out to be giardia. We had to have his stool lab tested to diagnose it. It took us five weeks and two different medications to get him over it. He has been fine for several weeks now. My understanding is giardia can't really be eliminated but as the pup gets older, the immune system gets stronger and keeps the parasites in-check. However, you all do have me interested in the Eagle Pack Dog Food, although Dakota is doing fine right now on the Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food.

Hey everyone, found this old thread and its pretty helpful. We just took our 13wk old Lucy to the vet, they tested for giardi and it came up negative, but Dr gave us the medication anyways. She also suggested half a pill of Immodium to help with the loose stools. She went about 11 times (peanut butter type poop and consistancy), inside our apartment kitchen, and a few times when she happened to be outside.

Any additional thoughts? We're on Pedigree Puppy and my wife (and I am too) are thinking about finding a new brand. I read all these rave reviews about Eagle Pack... still using it now???

WELCOME!!

This is such an old post. I don't recall hearing the name of that dog food as of recent.

Is Pedigree an Organic food?
We have always had Bogart on organic........he now eats Orijen.
Also, did the vet check for thing other than Giardia? Bogart had that at 9 weeks and several parasites that I can't even recall the name of. The clearing up of this mess lasted months!
Somehow, he came from the breeder with all this stuff", yet she is reputable and clean. It just happened. We had to do several, several treatments and a special diet.
