Well, I don't think this is an emergency.....

BUT!! Coco ate a granola bar with tiny chocolate chunks in it! the bar is small and the chunks are small.....

Should I be in a panic???

I know chocolate is poisonous to dogs, but this little bit?? She found it on the counter, of course....my son was going to take it to work with him and forgot it....I didn't even notice it was there!

I guess I'll call the vet!  :( :!:

hi Jane,
You are correct, this little bit of chocolate shouldn't hurt Coco. Chocolate is toxic in a ratio of ounces to the weight of the dog. I don't know what the ratio is anymore, but it would take several ounces to be critical, I believe.

Either way, it's still a VERY GOOD idea to have information from your vet on hand. There's something that will help them vomit that is a good idea to have on hand too....is it Peroxide? I wouldn't know the dosage on that, either, but it's something like that.

OK............the vet said she could get a little loose stool later today, but that she would be fine. I put the bars in the pantry where they belong!

thanks, Maureen........

The vet said the worst thing would be to consume the dark bakers chocolate....the whole package would be a concern.....

A little bit, I mean a little bit, shouldn't hurt her.

I have hydrogen peroxide on hand.....I had to give her a shot after she ate the new bottle of tums.....91 of them to be exact!! Actually I had to pour another shot down after 15 minutes or so.....it works. We had a pile of tums outside. When I say "shot" I literally gave her a shot glass full.
Twice.
( You know how dogs return to their vomit??? I had to hurry and go clean it up so she wouldn't have to go through the whole thing over again!!!!!!)

our dogs love chocolate. our vet said the same thing to me a long time ago, its has to be A LOT to harm them. A bite of a cookie does nothing :)
even the one pound of sees candy didnt hurt (but boy were they in trouble!!)

wow...great info on chocolate thanks!!!

and this isn't funny but there is humor in this: we once had 2 papillons and one was a demon from hell. One day i asked my son where this demon was and he repied"Mommie he's under the dining table eating your chocolate bar. " hahhaa anyway, i was tempted to say let him eat it -----but I raced over . It was too late, he at the whole thing. and NOTHING happened to him. he also ate sudafed and his poop turn TEAL for 2 days. once again he was fine. he ate a whole stick of margarine, my leather gloves and the list continues. NOTHING ever happened to that demon dog hahhahahaa

from my understanding if a dog consumes a LARGE amount of chocolate then they get their stomachs pumped.

JANE i am sooooooo relieved to hear COCO only ate a tiny bit...whew!!!
and at least she chose the healty one  and get out the canned pumpkin just in case

My bosses Labrador once ate
a ten lb bag of dry cat food and three chocolate easter
bunnies for a total of about 5lbs of chocolate.
This was all at one time. His poops were messed up for a
few days but he did fine.
Bahahahaaaaaa!!!

Glad to hear Coco is ok. And I appreciate the weight to amount of chocolate chart.

I was reading the different posts about what dog has consumed what to my son and DH. Turns out my DH's high school friend had a big dog of some kind (he can't remember the breed), but that dog ate one of those 6V batteries (think lantern type - it has the screw cap terminals). The dog eventually had to have surgery to remove it, but nothing else happened to the dog.

There was a whole show on Animal Planet about surgeries animals have had to have because they ate weird stuff....
Like an iguana had surgery to remove a copper penny....that would have killed it due to the chemical reaction in his gut......

A battery?? Scarry! What about the acid in them??? I guess it stayed intact and didn't leak out.....

Thank you for the chocolate chart....that was interesting!! and a good reference for Easter time...... :?

I am going to have to be more vigilant about the counter surfing she does... maybe it is time for the can filled with stones?
she just won't stop it!!

Last week Duncan (the labrador ;)) was in the house alone for 5 seconds and my daughter caught him with the pizza box in his mouth. She grabbed it and opened it and there was no pizza in it. She is positive there was at LEAST 1/2 a pizza in the box and we cant figure how he had time to open the box, scarf the pizza and then prance happily with the box closed again in his mouth!!

In May Duncan (again!) was "helping" me pack and I didnt notice anything missing but the next morning there was throw up all over the "Duncan Room". It had tons of flat white strips and I was panicking thinking I have never seen so many worms in my life and yet something wasnt quite right. Took me about three hours to realize he had stolen a bag of shredded coconut!

Last Halloween I got home and the 5 POUND bad of double bubble bubble gum was missing. THere is nothin funnier than big pink poops for three days!

We always loved telling stories about what our lab, Boomer, would eat. He fished a gift wrapped one-pound box of Godiva chocolates out of the bottom of a shopping bag without disturbing any of the other gifts on top of it and ate every last piece, leaving behind a trail of the little brown fluted papers. That box of candy cost about $30 so that was an expensive one. plus the vet visit. Another time he chewed the bottom off a plastic syrup bottle and licked all the contents out but he was very neat - not a sticky residue left anywhere - not on his face, not on the floor. Then there was the time he got under the sink and ate a box of brillo soap pads. The vet said try the peroxide, which worked, but then he threw up mounds and mounds of blue soapy suds. What an adventure! We're hoping our labradoodle doesn't have the same inclinations - so far, so good - but that could be because we crate this dog when we leave the house and still supervise him pretty well when he's not in the crate - but the lab pretty much had the run of things. Lesson learned.

That is just too funny (as long as he was okay).

Chase, my lab, once ate almost a whole chocolate cake and other than being stuffed, he was fine. He has also eaten a whole Heavenly Ham and loves new packages of those cheap dinner rolls

Worst dog experience was when my cocker spaniel Peche ate 1/4# of coffee beans. I called the vet and he said that since Peche had such a strong heart to just keep and eye on him. He said "He probably won't sleep much tonight!". Boy was he right! Up til 4am and every time he pooped, I swear it smelled like Starbucks!! I would say Caribou....but our coffee is better!

OK, Gene, I have to ask.....where do you work? for Starbucks???

I love the Christmas Blend they have, but sorry to say that when I was in Minnesota at my folks....I was introduced to Caribou Coffee. Can't get it down here.....but I loved their decaf!! In fact, it is my favorite of all kinds!! Wish Coco's room clearing toots smelled like Caribou....I could give her some Decaf and avoid the 4 am pleading for her to settle down!!

Actually, I hve quit certain treats and pigs ears and switched her to Canidae and she doesn't stink the place up anymore.....even her poop isn't as bad!!

Canidae and Best Shot my favorite! ( and Caribou )
