Bet you think this is going to be a question about how to keep the puppies away from a hot coal stove... well, the heat itself takes care of that at our place so it's not a problem.

However, I've caught Echo eating the coal! It's what's called "rice coal" because the chips are small, about the size of 2-3 grains of rice. I don't know if this will have any adverse health effects. I don't see any in his stool. I also don't notice any changes in his appetite or behavior so I don't think it's causing any problems.

Does anyone know if this can be harmful other than clogging his system?

I'm not sure, but I would guess it would be the same as a dog eating rocks or stones...no nutritional value  And if you are not seeing them in his stool, where are they going? I guess that would be my concern...also if the coal was sprayed with some type of chemical to keep the dust down, that could be concerning. Maybe you could x-pen the stove off for a while?
