Has anyone's doodle gotten pink eye? Tate starting pawing at his eye earlier this evening. :( Now his eye is matting up with a greenish discharge. It is slightly swollen. We are taking him to the vet first thing in the morning but just wondering what we are in for. ..eye drops? antibiotics? Thanks.

No insight to offer, just my wishes that whatever it is clears up soon!

My guess is that if it is conjunctivitis, then you'll probably get antibiotic eye drops just like a human would get. Keep us posted, I'm curious to know what it is.

AND WASH YOUR HANDS!! You don't know how contagious it is yet.

Hi Erica, I'm sorry Tate is having some problems with his eye. It may be that he has something in it. Has he been out in the brush? Here in Kansas with all the wind and so many weeds and seeds that the dogs are always getting something in their paws or in their eyes. It could be that something has blown in his eye and it is a little infected. The vet will be able to tell if his cornea has been scratched and will probably give you some antibiotics to put in for a few days. I'm sure Tate will be good as new in a few days. Please keep us informed on what the vet says :)

Back in the day, we used to consult a large paperback tome called "Country Women," written by back-to-the-landers, about animal husbandry and building pens and coops and such. One of the tricks I learned from it involved using a dilute solution of lemon juice - just enough lemon juice to make the water a tad acid - for pinkeye in goats and sheep, but I've used it on my own (human) kids as well. What it does is change the pH of the eye to make it inhospitable to the bacteria that cause conjunctivitis, and it works. They also recommended blackberry leaves for scours (diarrhea) in lambs and kids, and that worked, too.

Not encouraging anyone to use this if they feel uncomfortable with it; just saying what we did!

We got back from the vet this afternoon. After checking his eye over and verifying that there were no abrasions, she confirmed that he did have conjunctivitis and gave us an ointment to put in his eye for the next 4-5 days. She said that he wouldn't be contagious after this weekend. He has stopped pawing at it which makes me feel better. Thanks for everyone's concern.

wash your hands frequently - its quite contagious until those first few days of antibiotics. A warm washcloth helps with comfort and to remove gunk. It only takes 1/4" of ointment in the eye. I strongly suggest doing both eyes (trust me on this). Its imperitive you do not touch the end of the medication dispenser to the eye. I personally find putting the ointment on the end of a qtip one side for each eye works to keep the enviroment sterile and does not spread the infection. Again wash your hands a lot!! And perhaps his bedding!

Sorry to hear of the trouble with pink eye....didn't know dogs could get it.
Does the lemon juice burn??? I would think so.

The "Country Women" sounds like interesting info.
Would love a copy of the book, any ideas where to get one? I will check around. Know when it was published?]

Hope you see quick healing in Tate!
