Hi guys. I noticed a growth in Boyd's mouth this morning. It's located on the black tissue that covers his gums and teeth (what do you call that anyway?). At first I thought it was a blueberry or something stuck on his tooth but when I started to tug at it I realized it's an actual growth - it's located between the canines and molars. Like I said, it looks like a blueberry or a big wart - it's black.

Any idea what it might be? Of course, we have a vet appointment lined up. Could it be an infection? Maybe he cut himself and it got infected?

I'm scared but I'm sure it's nothing...

Don't worry! It sounds like it is exactly what you said: a wart...or your vet will call it a fancy name like Canine Papilloma Virus
It will go away by itself and is not contagious to humans.
Puppies get them alot because their immune system is not as strong as a full grown adult.
But I would get it checked anyway, just to be sure!
let us know!

I am glad that you have a vet appointment to be certain, but until then, don't worry too much...Once Rosie had a black piece of skin covering a tooth...I think the tooth just was not getting through the skin. So, I brushed her teeth and gave her lots of chewies and it came off on its own...and the tooth broke through. Now, if Boyd is not wanting chewies then it must hurt and I'd leave it alone...
He could have gotten something, like a splinter or bone fragment caught in his tooth and it may be infected too...
May be nothing...so, until you know for sure, don't get too frightened.
Please let us know what your vet says.

Hi everyone - thanks for all your concern! I got home from the vet much later than expected yesterday. They took Boyd (unexpectedly) into surgery and removed the growths (there were two of them) and sent them to be biopsied just to be safe.

They are 99% sure they are warts that are apparently very common in puppies who attend daycare b/c they are so contagious. Now
Jim and I feel like we have a dog with an STD...LOL!!! :) Thanks for
the concern and I will also let you know when the biopsy results come
back.

And, speaking of daycare, I was asked by the vet to keep Boyd from daycare on Monday since he could still be contagious, which I'll do.

I just wonder if the owner of the dog that gave Boyd the warts knows he/she has them. See, doesn't it sound like an STD???

i am so glad to hear Boyd is going to be fine. thanks for the update.

Are you going to tell the daycare so they can let others know? And can he get them again if someone else's dog is contaigous?

Oh, whew! I am so relieved! Thanks for posting!

I agree, you should tell the day care people...and in fact, I wouldn't take him back until they had all of the dogs checked and cleared and have washed all of the chewtoys and things...

If it is that contageous, I'd want to be sure he isn't re-infected...and they need to make sure someone elses dogs doesn't get it.

Wowie...so glad it was not more serious...will be waiting for the report!

Hi again! Yup, I called the daycare and talked to the owner. She said they had an outbreak a couple years ago and that she was very glad I called. They call it the puppy kissing disease - see I told ya he had an STD! :)

The owner put notices out and all dogs are being checked and all owners of dogs that go there will be notified.

I'm sure Boyd can get them again which is a bummer. The bill was not cheap and I'm sure VPI probably won't cover the same thing twice.

Thanks again. Boyd is 100% today. Last night the sedative was still with him so he looked and acted like a drunken sailor...

Lora, I'm so glad to hear that Boyd is recovering well from his "STD" surgery. (STD for dogs... what next???)

You did exactly the right thing in notifying the day care center, and it sounds like they are dealing responsibly with it as well. Best wishes for not having another wart attack!

Glad Boyd is on the mend. Good thing you're a great doodle mommy and caught it, and BRAVO to you for informing the daycare center. Not all dog owners are as responsible as you! Hope it all clears there and he can be back playing with his buds again!!

Fabulous news! So glad that Boyd is on the mend and that you caught it before it became worse...Imagine...kissing disease for dogs!
Add my kudos for your notification of the day care center and for their very responsible and caring handling of the situation!
They must be wonderful providers...please let them know that your forum friends are very proud of them!

So happy to hear that Boyd will be ok! :D It can get pretty nerv-wracking when one of our Doodles gets sick! Knock on wood, so far so good with Raleigh!

So glad Boyd is ok! Just so you know he should now be immune to any possible reinfection. Immunity starts 3 weeks after infection and there is a 4 - 6 week incubation period.
