Another trip to the vet :(

Dexter had some major poop problems last night (i.e. going 6-7 times)...woke us up at 4 am crying like crazy to go out...and we came home from work to a poop mess in the basement (he had thrown up too).

I took him to the vet after work. They took x-rays and it seems that he ate something fairly large. We have to bring him back tomorrow for more tests and possible surgery to remove the item :(

Please keep Dex in your thoughts tomorrow that they are somehow able to determine the item can pass w/o surgery. You would never know anything was wrong...he's acting totally like "normal".

what's up hungry man Dexter?
seriously...it's like his lab side is coming out all of a sudden...I am praying he will vomit up whatever is down there overnight...
Thanks everyone. Poor Dex is definitely distressed...he has been crying (horrible cries) most of the evening. I was given an emergency vet number in case there is an emergency overnight...hopefully he will just settle down and nap.
Well Dexter calmed down around 10 pm and slept pretty well through the night. He sounded like he tried to throw up once, but nothing came up. He looked really really mad at me this morning when he got no breakfast (I think an appetite is a good sign, right?). He wrestled some with Kirby after his walk and then we took him to the vet.

The vet promised me that surgery will be the last option and that they would evaluate if he can pass it or if there is some other way to address it. So we left our little guy there and are at work. I should hear an update by 10.

My heart was breaking there...a lab was brought in who had been hit by a car and was going to have his leg amputated  I was almost crying watching them take him in...

Thanks again for the good wishes - will update again later.

I have some good news...before they sedated him, Dex started throwing up pieces of a tennis ball. They are going to take another x-ray to see if the amount in his stomach is less and hope that he will be able to eliminate the rest of it himself.

We have eliminated all tennis balls from our house, but they have them at the dog park (he was there on Saturday)...I bet he found something to munch on there. We are going to have to keep a really close eye on him there from now on.

I'll keep you all updated when we know more.
Dexter update: I spoke to the vet and there are still 2 larger pieces of ball in his stomach. They are giving him meds to try to help him vomit it up. She said he's still very happy and alert so she doesn't see any immediate danger with trying to wait it out. Our plan is that we will pick him up after work, bring him home for the night and the bring him back tomorrow where they will reassess. She said there is no way he will be able to poop these pieces up so if he cannot throw them up he will need surgery. Keep your fingers (and paws) crossed.
A lady I ran into at the park had a big metal muzzle on her poodle.
funny you mention that - my husband told me we need to get him a muzzle for the dog park so he can't eat random stuff.
Ok so we are home with Dex. He did not throw up anymore at the vet. Since he is still happy and active the vet is comfortable giving it another day...so tomorrow morning he will go back to the vet for more x-rays and more meds to try to induce vomiting. However if he does not throw it up by tomorrow (mid day I think) the vet wants to do surgery. She said she doesn't want to give him too much of the meds because it can cause illness.

He ran around the yard like normal with Kirby, but clearly got tired quicker (he has had 1/2 cup food in 2 days). The vet said we could give him 1/4 to 1/3 cup of food...he almost ate my hand when I was feeding him. Hoping he vomits!!

Funny story - the vet tech said he was totally calm all day...only when we arrived to pick him up did he start crying and barking...I wonder if he heard our voice or could smell us?

If he does need assistance, will they do the endoscopic surgery where they go down his throat, therefore no incision?
I asked this too Linda. 1) Our vet hospital does not have the ability to do this, but even if they did, 2) our vet said the pieces are large enough that she wouldn't feel comfortable doing this. She said if you try w/something too large that it could get stuck up further (throat?) and cause a bigger problem.

Oh yeah - I was kinda joking about the muzzle...the sadder part is wondering if we should not take him any longer as there will probably always be tennis ball parts :(
Well we are on day 2 at the vet's. Dex acted totally completely normal yesterday after work...he played with Kirby (a lot) and then napped. He did not cry or whine at all. He gobbled down the 1/4 cup of food we were allowed to give him (he definitely has an appetite). He started making sounds like he was going to throw up around 3 am, but unfortunately nothing came up. He went running into the vet's this morning like he wanted to go (in a strange way I think he enjoyed all the attention/activity there yesterday).

So the vet is happy to wait a bit more and take more x-rays...she said since he's in such good spirits that she doesn't see a need to rush it. Thanks again for the good wishes... :)

Another day at work worrying about Dex...
ok another Dex update for you - still hasn't thrown it up. However the vets there agree that they still want to avoid surgery and therefore have referred me to a vet hospital that can do an endoscopy. We have a 2 pm appointment so I'll be leaving work soon (luckily my supervisor is super understanding and will just let me work from home the rest of the day and not use vacation). He will likely be there until ~7-8 pm. I will keep you update - hope this works
and so the saga continues...

Took Dex to the emergency vet...to make a long story short, they could not give me any good assurance that the endoscopy would be successful. The cost of endoscopy at the emergency vet is insane...and if not successful they would have to do surgery at that time (cost for surgery is insanex2). Given all of this, we decided to go back to our normal vet tomorrow morning and have them do surgery.

I don't want to sound cheap - we would definitely pay for the endoscope if we felt there was a good chance it would work. But what they told us made it sound almost more like 50/50...

So prayers for Dex that by some miracle he vomits overnight...and if not that his surgery goes well.

Thanks for the continued support :)

P.S. You would seriously not know anything was wrong with Dex - he is still more active than Kirby.

Thank you again for your support :) You know...I feel much calmer and better about the surgery now that it's set. The emergency vet we went to today was very nice, but also crazy about the "tests" they wanted to do (it was just one after another) and I really felt like they were trying to make (a lot of) money off us. The more I read about these surgeries, the more I find that they are not that unusual and our vet said the recovery time will be just a bit longer than a neuter. We could try to wait the weekend, but you know how the worst alwasy strikes on Saturday afternoon after all normal vets are closed.

Ok I'll stop rambling now :) Will provide more info tomorrow.
so...the x-rays still show something for sure?...
yeah it's definitely still in there (the expensive emergency vet took a very very nice detailed x-ray). They did present the option to wait longer, but it's been in there since Saturday and I would be too nervous come the weekend.
Well Dex is at the vet...of course we have our one big snow of the year today :) We would have just worked at home but we had to drop him off so we're at work. I thought I was fine, but then was crying at the vet...how am I going to deal when we have kids? Anyway, it should be over by 12-2 ish.

Wow...Ozzie threw up something that large?? Uggh...why couldn't Dex get the ball piece out?? I'm glad to hear Ozzie is ok!!
