Our neighbor two doors down has a huge rottweiler that stays gated on her deck. When we were moving in he got loose and came over here and was growling at us. Our next door neighbor said "don't let him near your dog, he is very aggressive". Well, at that point I was ready to move again. But he didn't get loose again for quite awhile.

Then the other day I had Dex out in the back on a leash and I heard a low pitched bark from the side yard. I shoved Dex in the door (thank goodness it wasn't mid-poop  ) and sure enough, there came the rott around the corner into my back yard! Then Kevin had the same thing happen to him and he took a chair from the deck and banged it on the deck to scare him away. I've started taking a tire tool out with me. I can't imagine hitting a dog, but I believe I would if I had to. So last night, Dex is going crazy growling at the front window, and I look out to see the rott coming up my side yard again. I looked the lady's number up and at 11:00 p.m. got her out of bed to tell her to corral her dog. She said "oh, he's not aggressive" and I corrected her. She came out and yelled for him and he went home. Maybe now she will keep him in but I doubt it. There is no animal control officer in this small town. I am about to call the mayor on it.

What would you do?

Yikes
It really shows that some people should not own a dog.
Unfortunately the dog is going to lose here as the owner knows
there are problems and chooses to ignore. Where i live the dog would
be picked up by the SPCA and the owner would be fined when they came to pick up dog. If dog was abandoned then dog would be re-homed.If dog
was truly aggressive then dog would be put down(even though we like to think we have no kill policies)
What are the policies where you live?

In our town, the police (if called to complain about the dog) would cite the owner, an animal control person (usually from the humane society) would visit the dog's home to help determine if the dog was aggressive, and a hearing would be scheduled where all parties would be able to express their opinions and experiences.

Do you care whether or not you alienate your neighbor? You have already talked to her about the situation once, if she doesn't keep the dog under control, I wouldn't hesistate to call the police. Do you have "leash laws" there? At the least, she is not keeping the dog under control.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Knowing that I never let my dog off-leash (until we get the back fenced, first on the to-do list) I haven't looked into the leash laws yet. I wasn't thinking about other people being in violation :?

I thought the first step of calling the mayor (or his wife who is a personal friend of mine) would get me up to date on the laws. They are probably similar to the town we moved from, except they were enforced there by the local city police and there was a holding pound. Here, there are no city police, only the county deputies, who won't enforce leash laws as they have no time (only 1 deputy on duty for a county of 5,000). And to my knowledge we have no holding pound. The law there was that no dog was allowed to run free off a leash or they would be picked up and the owner assessed a $35 fee for pickup.

The neighbors all are terrified of the rottweiler and when you talk to them about it, they express the wish that someone would take the initiative to dispose of him, any way possible. I would much rather have the authorities take care of the problem, for sure. But they all also state that the owner is a really nice lady and a long term resident and no one wants to allienate her. I don't know her, and personally if it comes down to protecting my sweet dog or making her mad, well she'll get glad in the same pants she got mad in. This is my yard, I pay for it, and my dog should be able to enjoy it safely.

I'm not sure what to do next, but I think I'm going to make a call to Millie today. First step.

I agree with you 100%.... call your friend and see what she can find out...i.I know you don't want to alienate your new neighbor 'but'............maybe invite her over for coffee, and have a talk with her...let her know how frightened you and Dex and hubby are of the Rot...
We've got a similar situation at our place in NH...'George' the Weimarner is constantly on our property, pees on the vegetables, poops where he pleases, gets into the garbage if the garage door is open, and drives Molly and Raleigh nuts!! We installed the invisible fence, so that our dogs could run and have a great time up north...
P.S. We've called the police 4 times, who in turn calls the dog warden...we've seen the people in person twice, asking that they keep George contained...the second time we gave them a $50 gift certificate towards an invisible fence....still George is roaming....their neighbors have even shot paint balls at him, whch I don't like, because it's not George's fault, it's the gosh darn owners!!! Who by the way obviously have no regard for their neighbors, or property...THERE...sorry I vented, and I wish you luck...because we certainly haven't had any...luckily, George is quite docile...

It is so unfair to animals that the owners let them roam, because usually the animal is the one that pays in the end

I would definitely find out the laws. I'd talk to the owner and tell her, though she does not find her dog aggressive, you do, he has charged you more than once on your property and ask her to please contain him as you dont' want to have to involve the aurthorities - see what she says/does

I would not hesitate to call the law if it meant protecting me and my pooch

I agree 100%! This situation makes me mad twofold, one obviously because we're in danger/uncomfortable situation, and two because the poor dog is in danger too, and it's not his fault. Pork Chop gets out of his kennel on occasion and he comes and peeks in the screen door at me smiling. Of course he's a doll and doesn't bother me in the least. But I get mad at his owners. A major highway runs through here, and I would not be able to handle hearing the screaching of tires and seeing him hit. But usually as soon as Ken sees he's out, he goes into town to find him begging at the diner and brings him home.

I left a message on Millie's phone and am waiting for a return call. I get madder the more I think about this. Arrrggghhh!

I am so sorry you have to deal with this and also have the worry he's possibly agressive.
Go thru the right channels and find out the laws on leash, complaints etc.
I hope you get this solved soon..

My dad has a neighbor that has 2 dogs that bark all day and night. then they pull up his plants, poop wherever 2 times a day. He tried talking to the owners to no avail. Know what he did? hahhahaa remember Dad's a southerner
the following Sunday morning he got out his HUGE leaf blower, filled it with gas, then set it down in his neighbor's driveway and walked back home letting the blower run till it ran out of gas.
The neighbors barks aren't barking as much now. and also realize what he means by 2 poops a day , 365 days a year he has to pick and would gladly deliver them for free. Seems the dogs aren't pooping in his yard much as of recently hahahaa

I hate when owners use the "my dogs not aggressive" excuse. Whether the dog is or not is not the issue. Mine are extremely gentle, but I make sure they don't get loose. There's horrible things that could happen to the dog. Maybe with repeat offenders we should kennel the owners, or put them on a tie out!!
In my opinion, you are doing the right thing! Good luck!!

And now you don't get to enjoy your yard as much because you're always tense the agressive dog will come out. That's just not right!

My sister in law lives in a more rural area and when she takes her 2 labs for a walk she wears: a reflective vest, a web-belt for her pepper spray and stun gun and carries a collapsible baton---all because there are people in her area that don't keep their dogs contained and have come at her and her dogs.

People can be so incredibly rude and dumb! I hope you can resolve the issue before it gets worse!

And on a lighter note:
