Boy you got that rite

You sure are so right there Linda
Its just no matter what ,,,,we are all breeders not god,
unfortunatly we cant predict the future no matter how much we wish we could,,
We can test till the cows come home still its all in how the genes fall, There are NO genetic markers for most things that people want to call congential or genetic, so its tottally impossible for us to predict ,,,NOT to mention what some of these people allow the pups to do once in they get them home, I sometimes feel like they think,,oh well we dont have to worry ,,we will get our money back if we let the dog do things that will injure it in the long run,,This i think gives them free reigh to not keep the pup safe,,am i making sense here?

I believe proper nutritition ,handing, protecting from over stress of bones and joints, during growth is essential when dealing with Hip/Joint issues, My vet checks joints when we do well pup check ups, extensively, if there is a Real problem we can tell then normally,,the tightness comes as they mature, and i feel and my vet agrees they are not fully mature until close to 2yrs..
you take on a puppy ..you take all responsibilities that go with it,,just like a child,,In fact these should be considered your child, they depend on their families for everything, including protection from themselves,
Sorry so long,,these points have just be weighing heavy on my mind

I too am not a breeder and wonder about refunds. I sometimes think a 2 year guarantee is EXTREMELY GENEROUS. But understand why you would.

I am with AnnieG , i say it depends on the circumstances and it pays to do your homework
I wonder the same thing, since as i stated above these are living beings
most genetic problems present themselves within the first year, ie,eyes, seizure as annie discribed, blood problems, etc, (all i could think of right now)
I dont put HD in the same category,, its a crap shoot no genetic marker and to many if ands or buts involved,,
May just do life threatening for 5yrs ,pup replacement ,, like i used to do,,this gives the families more incentive to take better care of pup while it is maturing, are you on my thought line ?? or am i way off?

One more thought on this....because I know the HD is a possibility in any dog, I purchased an insurance policy that would cover a good part of the cost if GFB this occured...I felt it was my responsibility as a pet owner.

That is such a great idea,, and a smart move,, may i ask what insurance you have? and how you like it so far? if its worth the cost?
See NOW that is VERY responsible!!! and i commend you for thinking ahead :)

AnnieG , like you I have full coverage with peanut and max but ihave VPI insurance.

when peanut got sick, the ER visit was $260 the next day she had to stay at the vets for 3 days that cost $485 and i didn't have insurance and was asked the horrible question of..." we may do emergency surgery and it will then cost over $1000, can we do it if necessary?" I said yes but had to say i didn't have all the $$$ upfront. My vet was great saying pay in small amounts ...luckily NO surgery.

The next week i had insurance so i never have to be in that situation again. :D and i feel it is my duty to have coverage in case of any unexpected events.

I went with the pet insurance that Metropolitan offers because it covers genetic conditions, which was my main concern, that plus cancer coverage.

I already had Tanner neutered and had his first year shots and exams so I didn't get VIP which offers good first year coverage.

My coverage costs me $50 per month and it covers Tanner and my 11 year old cat....

I had Pets Best insurace coverage on my first doodle...they covered a reasonable amount of her medical expenses but were slow to reimburse.

I would suggest it for all new doodle owners.

here's a post i am revisting cause i saw breeders working with each other and sharing along with forum members contributing as well

and like history, certain questions do keep coming up over again...i may be studding Beau but i also need to be aware of health contracts of the dam's side

I am learning both ends of breeding so to speak.

thanks to everyone who helped make this post a good one!! :D

PS and it also explains why deletions have to happen every so often

I just read that large cooperations are offering pet insurance for their employee's. isnt that wonderful....wish my employer would, at a discounted rate doesnt that make sense....I mean its about 5-10% off the normal cost but savings is $avings after all....

Maybee if we all got together and formed a comittee we could sign up a large number of people & get a good discount...
hmmmmmm
We don't have pet insurance but it does sound like a super idea....just to have peace of mind in case the visit to the ER in the middle of the night on a Sunday is in order....

Is your thought that you would offer it to people who adopt your puppies or anyone in general? After our recent incident with Dexter I am strongly considering insurance for them (even though we already belong to Banfield and receive discounts)...so if people who currently own dogs can join in on a group plan we would possibly be interested (depending on price, coverage, etc) :)
