A Different Groomer...?

We just went to the feedstore to pick up some chicken Canidae for Chou, since she likes that better than the mixed variety, and I saw a card for a groomer there. She uses the same building so I walked over with Chouette to check her out. She seems really nice, and competent, and knows labradoodles, although she said the ones she grooms aren't as laidback as Chouette, who was lying peacefully on the floor after accepting a dog biscuit and exploring a bit. She noted that the doodles in her area are a pretty wild bunch, and it didn't seem as though she thought much of them, although she was very impressed with Chou. I told her how careful I'd been to research breeders and be sure that health issues were investigated thoroughly. It sounded as though the ones she knew were just haphazard lab/poodle crosses to take advantage of a fad, rather than the result of a thoughtful breeding program. One more argument for choosing your breeders carefully!

She commented that Chou's current cut was a poodle trim, not a labradoodle style, and knew that most doodle owners like their pets' hair to be longer. I made an appointment for Chouette for the end of November, since by then she'll definitely need it in the face, at least. Michele also suggested coconut oil for her ears; she says it's an excellent antioxidant and is good for yeast issues. Apparently you buy it at a health food store like Haars, in a glass jar preferably, and mix it with their food after softening it. (She puts some in a bowl and then heats it in water on the stove because she doesn't think microwaving preserves the antioxidant values as well.)

She'll charge $35 for Chou's size and no more than $50 for a larger doodle. And she bathes, trims, does nails and ears, and all the usual stuff. And she's 15 minutes away from us, about the same as Petsmart in another direction. Not sure what I'll do with myself for the two hours she needs, since at Petsmart there are lots of other stores and other things for me to get into in the general area. But if it results in a happier and better-groomed puppy it's worth it!

So I guess I'll hold off on the clippers for a bit!

It really helps if you find a good groomer who knows what they are doing. Mine has said the same about the other doodles that she does...pretty wild bunch.

Tanner's groomer is going to do a maintenance every 2 weeks for $15 then a total groom only when necessary. She doesn't want to let him get matted so that he has to be shaved...says he doesn't have thick enough hair for winter.

The maintenance includes shampoo and brush, fanny trim, and nails if needed.

I think in the end it will save us money
wow - $50 for a larger doodle is a good deal. I love our girl at Petsmart, but sometimes I wonder if I should shop around.

If you're happy at Petsmart I'd stay there. And remember that I haven't actually tried out this girl's services, but I did like her attitude so far.

I guess Woodbine's a little far for you, huh?

$35-50? WOW!!

Sounds like you found a gem, Leslie! Trust is such a sweet issue...and being heard and respected is so valuable, too.

ps.....tell the groomer we have more sweet, calm puppies coming next week! (From Fancy, not Sheba)

I'll let you know if she's as good as she sounds. She is planning to give Chou a longer trim on the body so she looks fluffy but neat, and of course make it easier for us to see those big brown eyes. Don't forget that we are RE-E-E-A-LLY in the boondocks, where the feedstore is located. There are lots of horse farms and other agricultural uses, so it's not exactly an urban center, and prices are correspondingly lower. Plus she doesn't advertise but just uses word of mouth. Not sure if I think six to eight weeks between trims is too short a time, but maybe not if I want her face to be visible.

She says she only refers people who want labs to a couple of breeders she knows; she's pretty fussy. I can certainly tell you you've got puppies coming. Are they standards or minis?

oh wow...I just looked up Woodbine - you are really far south in NJ! You are so close to AC and Wildwood...I love the beaches down in south Jersey.

Oh, yeah; when I say south I really mean SOUTH. Woodbine's about fifteen minutes southeast of us. We go to a dentist there, too. And it's on the way to Sea Isle City, which is the beach we've always gone to since the kids were little. We're about 50 minutes north of Cape May; I just went to the Bird Show there on Saturday.

It's a whole different world down here, isn't it?

Definitely! NJ is such a diverse state - unfortunately most people only know of the bad areas they show on TV, but there is a bit of everything (beaches, mountains, cities, etc)...property taxes and house prices stink though.
P.S. sorry for hijacking your post
Good luck with the new groomer. It sounds like she really knows her doodles. :)

Leslie, I love the way you describe NJ!

I tried breeding for mini f1b's but it didn't take with Copper and our mini poodle Hershey. I hope I know what went wrong so we don't see the same thing next time, but with breeding it's really disappointing when a whole litter is lost or doesn't show up.

Fancy is 22" - she's Standard and Keenan is the exact same size. They had the other litter together last Spring just after Chouette's litter arrived.

ps-I was just kinda joking.....of course I think that your new groomer is going to LOVE ChouChou! :D
