Okay, I know that the first thought is cancer...but I am trying to consider other possibilities...I just got a call from a puppy family. Their 6 month old pup (happens to be the one that almost died due to the dog food poisioning during the recall) was just taken to the vet with a huge growth along his side. I have not seen him, but am told that this growth is the size of a coke can! It runs lengthwise along his side. The vet took x-rays, looking for a cause but is baffled.
Before they found the growth, he was urinating uncontrollably...he is acting sick, but still has his appetite...doesn't want to play.
The vet asperated the lump and will run tests. They did not want to put him out to take a biopsy yet.
The lump feels, not solid, but not squishy like liquid.
I am heartsick and so worried.
Does anyone have a clue, other than cancer, what this could be?
I am floored by this. The owner was hopeful that I would have some ideas or that I had heard of something similar...but I have only heard of bone cancers growing this large...still, since it is not up around his rib cage, I can't imagine that it would be bone cancer. I believe it is more toward his underside.
The vet shaved him, thinking he's find a bruise or puncture, but nothing.
Would you please put litte Tucker in your "good thoughts" and prayers?

Maybe a benign lipoma? It's a fatty growth, they usually just watch it.
The aspiration results should be back soon. Try not to worry til you know what you have to worry about. It also could just be an infection that needs an antibiotic....
Puppy prayers for that gorgeous baby, I just know he will be fine.

Maybe cellulitis? This is what I would suspect if it was a person, so I am sure puppies can get it, too. Treatment with heavy duty antibiotics. Do they own any cats? Could he have gotten a scratch that healed before the infection was noticeable?
The uncontrollable urination would indicate infection, not cancer... so that is good.
I would definitely want him on an antibiotic, but I guess the vet is waiting for the aspiration results...but it really would not hurt to start one.

Renal cyst?? I know the mass is large, but I can't help thinking renal involvement since he had the urination problems right beforehand....

My prayers are with Tucker too....how devastating. Praying for the best outcome..

Fred has had two growths that the vet called histiocytomas. They are nonmalignant growths--but were not nearly as large as the pup's. Fred had one on his front leg that was about an inch round--we had that one surgically removed because it started to bleed. He has another on his tail that didn't get as big as the first and it has gradually gone away. They felt firm, but not hard. I read that these are not uncommon, but as I recall they are usually on the limbs. He sure is a cute puppy, I hope he is ok.

Thank you all so much for the hopeful information! I'll send that to the family.

Maureen...thanks, no news yet. I'll post when I hear anything...but it could be days. I don't really know what they are testing, how they are testing or how long before they get results, but I certainly will send along this information so that they can ask the right questions.

Thank you all!

Hi everyone...thanks so much for your caring thoughts and prayers and best wishes...I think it is all helping!
We have not yet heard from the vet. I hope to get some news this evening. But I did get a call and was told that Tucker is feeling better...and I have had so many wonderful people who write to say it could be many other things besides the big "C" word...so I keep praying for my sweet baby boy.
Thank you, my friends, for being there for me...yet again! Don't know what I'd do without you!

Tucker is such a doll baby!! I pray you will hear soon what you are dealing with....and that regardless of the report, there will be a solution that will bring healing and new health quickly.

I guess I would have to call the vet on Monday and ask how long it will be before the results will be in.....I have to have a time frame....if possible.
I don't wait well. I will pray hard for all.
